1) Shiba Inus have a strong hunting instinct. NEVER let a Shiba offleash if they are not fenced in. Their least favorite command is come. If they see a rabbit, they run. Kelsey has always come home if we didn't catch her but there is still the issue of getting hit by a car, attacked by another dog, etc. Although it doesn't happen often, it may. Is this something you can live with?
2) Do you have another dog? If so, is it a male or a female? Is it larger than the Shiba will be when it is full grown? Shiba Inus are same sex aggresive. A male shiba will not let another male be the dominant dog. Usually a larger breed of dog will be respected and fights should not occur, but this is never a guarentee. The same with the female. Any dog, male or female, smaller than a shiba will be dominated and bullied. Spaying/Nuetering helps with this but it is not a quarenteed fix. A chihuahua and a shiba don't mix! |
