10% of the population has a hearing loss. In Alaska, that is approxemately 68,000 people. That is like the entire population of Juneau and Fairbanks combined! Pretty unbelievable isn't it? Many of those people are not Deaf and do not use sign language as thier main form of communication. The term Hard of Hearing (HoH) is used to describe people that experience hearing loss but function in the hearing world. This poses difficult at times due to the fast-paced lives we lead. Many people give up and begin the cycle of isolation and depression. Depression is very common with those who have a hearing loss. Hearing loss is a hidden disability, which means that just by looking at someone, you cannot always tell there is a problem. People with a hearing loss have to advocate for themselves on a constant basis and this gets tiring so sometimes, they give-up. Life can be very frustrating for an individual with a hearing loss. At SHHHAlaska HLAA - Alaska We understand the needs of the HoH and thier support systems. We are here to help. |
