The Book of Protection
Chapter 05, Hogwarts:
~~
Hogwarts Castle Protection
There are eight Castles that legend proclaims protect Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and Hogsmead Castle Town. Only Four of them have been confirmed and then only in the past century. These castles are:
Angel's Aerie
Devil's Keep
Seeker's Archive
Healer's Domicile
They make the fabled outer protective ring of Hogwarts. The four castles that supposedly make up the Inner Protection of Hogwarts are:
Gryphon's Aerie
Serpent's Lair
Raven's Nest
Badger's Burrow
These are also supposed to be the home of the history and expectations of each of the four houses:
Griffondor
Slytherin
Huffelpuff
Ravenclaw
Originally the eight castles created a barrier around Hogwarts and Hogsmead. No evil could enter the barrier. However, since Salazar Slytherin could enter if is obvious from history's point of view that evil could enter so these castles do not exist.
The Legend is that the Inner Barrier was connected to all the students of each house. Their magic protected and enforced the barrier they were the power source of the barrier. As a student the Head of House tied them into the protections so if the barrier needed more power it didn't draw it's power from only one source hence draining that source. The premise behind this was that one person will run out of power faster then one hundred people.
The Outer Barrier is another story altogether, it was powered by 'Stones of Power' each stone was created by the whole school working together over the course of four years, the stones get their subsequent power from the ambient power around them. This power is magic that all things hove but most don't use.
Each Castle contributes in it's own way to the protection of a set amount of land around Hogwarts. Over the years the secrets of the castles, and yes even the castles themselves have been lost. Most say they never existed at all. Even the Library at Hogwarts only mentions them as a legend. Other places have more of the legend. This chapter only pieces together what this author has learned but all this has lead me to believe that these castles did indeed exist.
However, there is more to it then the history of the far past, at the turn of the century, the Potter's heir married a woman from a far country. His parents decided that they needed a wonderful home so a castle was bought for them. The name of the castle, they found out after it was bought, was the Angel's Aerie, the very same name of the castle in the legend. It was twenty-four kilometers directly north of Hogwarts School. They then looked for, and found, three other castles twenty-four kilometers; south, east, and west; of Hogwarts School. They bought them all and they are still in the Potters possession, to this day.
When James and Lily Potter died, the key to the Angel's Aerie was put in to a vault at Gringotts Bank, and will be given to Harry, their son, when he turns seventeen. If James' sister, Angela, returns from her exile, she will give the key to Harry. However the Ministry believes she is dead. The three other keys were hidden at the Aerie.
The Protection layout is something like:
However no one has ever located the Inner Defenses, although it is rumored that Sirius Black looked for them. Nonetheless, the Inner Defenses are only enterable if you are a member of its corresponding House, or an heir of the corresponding Founder. The Outer Defense Castles are easier to enter.

Hogwarts Gems of Protection
These rings were originally made by the Founders to protect their students from murder. Each person has a gem that they are most in tune with, that gem can hold a trio of spells to protect them.
One of the spells is a Shielding Spell; it can Shield from any attack as long as it is normally life threatening. Depending on the type and strength of the spell the Shield may not hold for long, but it will hold for long enough. It will hold off any death spell including the Killing Curse for at least three seconds, which is time enough for the other two spells to kick in.
The second spell is a transport spell; it transports the wearer of the gem to the House Castle of their House. If the Ring of Protection is given to someone who did not go to Hogwarts School then the transport spell will send them to one of five other locations if they are connected to a House, IE. Spouse or child of a Hogwarts student, then they will be sent to the Outer Castle corresponding to the House of the one they are connected to:
Griffondor= Angel's Aerie
Slytherin= Devil's Keep
Ravenclaw = Seeker's Archive
Huffelpuff= Healer's Domicile
If the person protected is not connected to a Hogwarts student then they will be sent to Hogwarts herself.
The third spell was a Creation spell; it will create a Similcron, a copy of that person and leave it in the persons stead. There are no magical means to tell the difference between a Similcron and a real person. The only way to tell is that a Similcron does not decompose.
When a person is sent to the House Castle they cannot leave unless a member of their House comes and releases the spells that protect them within the Castle, it takes a specific spell.
The Founders found rings to be the perfect setting for the gems- almost everyone wears rings. In addition, those who don't may be persuaded to wear them.
