An Introduction to
Mysterious Ways

© 1999, Debra Taylor

For three thousand years, the Legacy has stood as a bastion against evil.  Some Houses have fallen to evil . . .  others, such as San Francisco House, have been destroyed to combat evil.  And still others have persecuted the innocent, mistakenly believing that anything different  was evil.

And even in San Francisco, there is doubt.  Not about Derek Rayne, but about his father, Winston.  Killed by a fallen angel in 1969, it has been demonstrated that the elder Rayne went over to the Dark.  Or did he?  Was it really Winston Rayne who possessed his son, and caused the disappearance of William Sloan?  Or was it a demon who had assumed his form, assumed his identity?

The following story takes the assumption that it was a demon who challenged Derek Rayne and tried to bring him to the Dark Side, a demon who had precipitated the destruction of San Francisco House.  And since no one was pleased by the death of Derek Rayne, I've taken steps to resurrect him . . . but he pays a price for his new life.

There will be a few characters unfamiliar to viewers of  Poltergeist:  The Legacy.  First and foremost is Deirdre Barton, a mysterious woman who aids Winston Rayne in healing his wounded son.  The wife of a former Legacy member, and the mother of a precept, Deirdre died in 1982.  The victim of an attack by Jonathan Boyle, Deirdre went into premature labor. Already weakened by the attack and her anxiety for her young daughter Valerie (now the precept of Baltimore House), Deirdre faced another battle . . . a malevolent force which sought the life and soul of her newborn daughter.

Calling upon her powers as a witch and as a mother, Deirdre was able to protect her infant daughter Kerry, but the price was her own life.  It was her death which began the unraveling of her husband, coupled with the refusal of the young precept of San Francisco House, Derek Rayne, and the precept of the Ruling House in London, Sir Edmund Tremain, to hold Jonathan Boyle accountable for Deirdre's death.

But those adventures of Baltimore House will be chronicled in 'Mysterious Ways.'  Baltimore House numbers six:  Dr. Valerie Barton (the middle daughter of Deirdre Barton), historian and mage; Dr. Tatiana Elliot, consulting psychologist; Andrew Ramirez, head researcher; Renee Lawson, computer specialist; Danielle Grant, head of security; and Father Philip Callaghan, linguist and theologian.

This story  (A New Beginning) is but an introduction to the stories to come . . . and a way to keep Derek Rayne alive.
