Chapter 5~Pay

I rushed into my math class 3rd period. Ms. Shinner was in her cranky mood as always.

“Robyn, don’t disturb the class. Take your seat quickly!” Ms. Shinner roared.

I sat down in the seat next to Cheryl.

“Ppst! Robyn, where were you?” Cheryl asked as she leaned over her chair.

“Sorry! Long story,” I replied not wanting to reveal the truth.

My head kept on bobbing up and down in the middle of class. Obviously, I hadn’t gotten much sleep that night. I couldn’t believe that I just had a breakdown in front of Frankie. Let alone could I believe that I just had a breakdown. I ruined the bedroom of the hottest guy I ever met. I was sure that Frankie would tell his parents about what I did. My job would go straight down the toilet. Not to mention so would my love life. I just hoped that Frankie wouldn’t tell a lot of people what happened.

My 4th and 5th period classes slowly went by. I was relieved from stress when lunch came. I sat in my usual spot next to Morgan, Keith, Cheryl, Brad, and Mike.

“Where were you first period? I had to pair up with dork face Freddie in science class since you weren’t there,” Mike complained.

“Freddie isn’t that bad. Just because he picks his nose, blows gas, picks his ears, and snorts in public doesn’t make him a dork face,” I replied sarcastically, “I’m sorry. I over slept.”

I had to lie. Nobody knew I was depressed. Nobody knew I had to take pills to stop me from breaking down. Nobody knew that I was anorexic.

“It’s alright, but you better be there tomorrow. Freddie put his ear wax all over my notebooks today,” Mike laughed.

I was in the middle of laughing when nasty orange juice spilt all over my white flare pants.

“Oh, oops!” Julia said aloud with a grin on her face as she poured the rest of the orange juice on my lap. I shot up from my chair, grabbing the school’s chocolate pudding and poured it on top of Julia’s blonde, hollow head.

“You know, you don’t look too bad with brown hair,” I laughed. I didn’t know why Julia was always on my case, but it really ticked me off.

“Ms. Robyn Levinson! In my office, NOW!” I turned my head to see the vice principal glaring at me. I could have sworn I saw smoke blowing out of his ears.

I sat in his unpleasant office next to Julia Hoogan. Oh the nerve of that girl!

“You girls…” Mr. Glen, the vice principal, stated.

“Mmmhmmm,” Julia acted as if she didn’t care.

“Orange juice and pudding…” Mr. Glen continued while ignoring Julia.

“Orange juice,” I said, copying Mr. Glen.

            “And pudding,” Julia said enthusiastically.

“You girls…” Mr. Glen said again, “after school detention!”

Julia’s smile quickly turned into a frown. I was entertaining to see her upset. Of course I was upset, too.

“It was just some darn orange juice that could be washed off!” Julia stormed out of Mr. Glen’s office.

I sat anxiously in the detention hall while twirling my pencil. Just one more hour until I could dash out of that dreadful room with the most dreadful person, Julia. I was sitting between crack-head Dale and Kristen, who was breathing heavily. In the front of the room sat Julia, who was bribing Mr. Glen to get out of detention. She had just as much luck as I did for getting out of detention…at least that was what I thought.

A longhaired brunette entered the detention hall. She looked around the age of 18-20. I kept my on her because she looked fishy. Besides, there was nothing better to do. I watched carefully as the girl handed a yellow paper to Mr. Glen. His eyes skimmed through the paper.

“Robyn, your sister is here to pick you up,” Mr. Glen announced.

I had no idea what Mr. Glen was talking about, but I was just grateful to get out of that room and obtain some clean air. I glimpsed from Mr. Glen to the brunette girl. I wasn’t positive, but I thought I saw her wink at me. I slowly approached the brunette and glanced at the yellow paper that the girl had given to Mr. Glen earlier. All that I could manage to read was, “Please excuse Robyn. There has been a family crisis.”

I made half a smile and noticed Julia’s frown. That was the second time I saw her upset that day.

“Come on, sis! Mom needs us at home a-s-a-p,” the brunette stated. I followed her lead as we walked out the room into the deserted hallway.

“Before you start asking me a million questions, I’m Claudia. I’m a friend of a friend,” the girl smiled. She held out a hand for me to greet.

“Oh. Why did you get me out of detention?” I asked curiously as I shook her hand.

“I told you, I’m a friend of a friend,” Claudia repeated.

We walked down mid hallway when Claudia lifted her arm and glanced at her watch. “Well, it’s been nice talking to you, but I have errands to run.”

I stared at her in confusion and started to give a helpless smile. “Aren’t you going to bring me home?”

“No, but he is,” Claudia pointed to a person at the end of the hallway. I shook my head from side to side as I smiled the biggest smile. Frankie was waiting patiently at the end of the hallway. I slowly walked closer to him.

“What are you doing here?” I questioned as I nudged him.

Frankie sighed and replied, “Lets see…you ruined my mirror, my picture frames, my bedroom, my bathroom, and my closet. Plus, I had to clean all of it up by myself, annnnnnnd…I just got you out of detention. What else would I be here for? I’m here for my pay.”

            “Your pay?”

“Yeah, you owe me,” Frankie simply declared with his hands in his pockets.

“Okay, so what do you want?” I asked with a smile. I hoped it wasn’t anything big.

“First, you have to take me out to dinner tonight. Then, you have to take me out for ice cream. And then-”

“-Ahhhhh! Stop! I don’t deserve this much punishment!” I teased, “Haha. Well go on.”

“It’s not THAT bad! You wanna know what’s bad? You should have seen my room after you trashed it,” Frankie laughed, “Anyways, back to my payback. There’s a carnival opening this week. You have to take me to it.”

“Is that it?” I asked, hoping the answer was yes.

“Yes, no, maybe so,” Frankie gave a suspicious smile.

I turned my head back to where Claudia should have been standing, but she wasn’t there anymore. Frankie lead me to his red Mercedes convertible that was standing in the school’s parking lot. When we were seated in his leather interior of his car and we started off for my house, I was tempted to ask him a question.

“Sooo…who exactly is Claudia?” I eyed him. I hoped that she was just a close cousin or relative, just as long as she wasn’t Frankie’s girlfriend.

“Oh her? She’s a friend of the guys and me,” Frankie replied without any hesitation.

“Oh, okay,” I replied in relief. I eased back in my seat/

“What? You didn’t think she was my girlfriend or anything, did you?” Frankie asked while laughing. I started to giggle myself.

            “Of course not!” I fibbed.

Frankie tuned the radio station to Z100 when “With Arms Wide Open” by Creed came on. He blasted the speakers so everyone in the lanes next to us could here it.

“Ugh! Can we change the station? This song sucks!” I shouted over the music.

Frankie suddenly swerved the car to the right and made a quick stop at the nearest curb. He made skid marks on the road behind us. Frankie pointed at my car door and screamed, “Get out of my car!”

I sat in shock. I stared at Frankie. He had a face on that frightened me. It was the kind of face with temper that said, “I am serious.”

“Nobody comes into my car and says that Creed sucks!” Frankie yelled into my face. I quickly said what any other normal person would say.

“Okay, okay! I take it back! I take it all back! Creed does not suck. In fact, Creed is awesome! They are like my favorite band!” I yelled enthusiastically. Needless to say, I didn’t mean any word of it. *hehe*

Frankie grinned and said softly, “Thank you.”

I had to laugh at that. If there was anyone who was a total fanatic, I’d say it was Frankie.
