She's All Fat! Manifesto
This 'zine is not here to promote dieting or self-hate. Period. I want this to be about finding ourselves, who and what we want to be, NOT what others see in us or what someone thinks we should be. Everything is OUR choice and OUR decision. The truth is, many of us cannot control our bodies or how other people see us. But we can control how we see ourselves, and here lies all our power. =)
That's my first point. My second is an explanation -- the reason why I choose to use a seemingly offensive word, FAT, here. The reason is that the term "fat" is the only UNoffensive term to describe my body type, as I see it. "Overweight" implies that there is a 'right', 'normal' weight to be. And 'obese' *shudder* implies that you have a medical problem because of your size, which is certainly not always the case. So, I choose to use "fat". It's also a reclaiming of a previously offensive word for the purpose of turning it around to something powerful and positive.
NEW:
At one point, I talked of advocating a healthy lifestyle. We're still gonna talk about health, especially healthy self-image, but for physical health, I am now advocating a "fuck it" attitude. Too many people use health as a defense for discrimination and terrible self-esteem. So fuck health!
Everyone deserves equal, respectful treatment. Fat does not equal unhealthy. No one chooses their body size.
And if anyone did, they should not be mistreated because of it.
I'm not going to obsess over or even respect health as an apology for being fat.
Thanks. =)
So, that's the 'manifesto'. Continue on with the rest of the site! =)
