1) International Space Station

The International Space Station, also referred to as ISS is the next step in the journey of discovery, and represents a quantum leap in our capability to conduct research on orbit

It will be the largest most complex structure that has ever been placed in orbit. When the International space station is completed in the year 2003, it will cover an area approximately the same size as two football fields and will sleep seven. Built by a partnership of 16 nations, the station will be a giant laboratory for learning how to live and work in space-in preperation for future manned trips to the moon, Mars, and the universe beyond.

Animals, plants and even protein crystals grow differently in the absence of gravity, and scientists want to study these differences abroad the station. Thus, the ISS will enhance the scientific research and experiments beyond Earth.

2) Mission to Mars

Exploring planet Mars has been the dream of many scientists. The discoveries on Mars will foster technological advents on Earth, in the fields of medicine, engineering and business. The Mars Polar Lander is a revolutionary device, being used to analyze the surface and conditions of the red planet. Such steps will enable planet Earth to expand its frontiers in outer space.

3) Space and Society

The governmnets of participating countries in space explorations are spending approximately 96 billion dollars to enhance the ISS and mission to Mars.

- Could this money be used for the betterment of Earth ?

Most people argue that the money spent on space expeditions is a wasteful use of finances, as the same money could be used to fight poverty and hunger on Earth,

However, considering the fact that discoveries in space will change the lifestyle of humans and will have major implications for our future; provides governments of the participating nations an initiative to finance such missions and explorations in space.
