| How to Creating a portfolio: | ||||||
| 1) Title Page: Include name, address, or other identifying information required by law, as well as the academic school year covered by the portfolio. 2) Table of Contents 3) Attendance records, if required by law. 4) List of broad goals for the year: If educational objectives were required to be handed in at the start of the year, these should be the same ones you gave them. If you deviated from or modified the orignal goals, just list the goals you accomplished in what you wound up doing during the year. 5) Assessment report: for the family by subject areas, as described above. 6) Individual book lists: ( These don't need to list every single book read. I just try to list several representative books for each child.) 7) A few samples of work for each child in math and writing :( about three samples of each for each child.) If state requires that progess be demonstrated , try to pick samples from the beginning, and end of the year that show the progress made by the child. 8) Field Trip lists: Plus any pictures, post cards from the field trips, etc. that I decide to include. 9) Summary statement or closing paragraph: Comment on how well you feel your children met their goals (assuming they have met them.), what the stregths and weaknessess of each of the children are, and what my schedule plans for the next year might include. Be careful not to say anything that could lead to labeling or selection for special programs. Example: Don't say someone is speech delayed. Instead focus on specific accomplishments. Comment on how Clara's vocabulary has improved, rather than dwelling on the fact that he still can't say his "S" sound. On the other hand , avoid gushing. If one of your children is having trouble with punctuation or spelling for example, don't say he is doing a marvelous job with writing. Instead, concentrate on how well his ability to communicate has developed this year, and follow up with a brief comment that you intend to work with him some the following year in the area of mechanics such as spelling and grammar. |
