The Present

I look at her in gentle sleep
Slowly tears begin to seep
Why has life become so cruel
To hurt such a special jewel

Christmas should be a time of joy
But not for me without employ
A simple gift I could not buy
For money is in short supply

Her only want is out of sight
As with her father I must fight
To keep her safely in my keep
As legal fees become quite steep

I lay beside her, hugging tight
In tearful sleep into the night
I wake to soft kiss on my cheek
As tears again my visage streak

"Don't be sad it's Christmas day
I have your gift just by the way"
As to her dresser she makes her way
I watch and know not what to say

She brings and envelope beautifully tied
With ribbon bright and a bow so wide
With smiling face she places it near
Then wipes my cheek of one last tear

With shaking hands I pull the bow
Her smile so radiant begins to glow
A card is pulled from binding sheath
With Christmas tree and holly wreath

Hand painted pictures of her design
Adorned with two heart intertwined
"This is you and that one is me"
I'ts getting hard for me to see

With blurred vision it's opened wide
As she takes my hand and sits beside
"I'll read it for you if that's OK"
Yes I nod, words held at bay

"To my mom and my best friend
Christmas wishes to you I send
You are my star upon the tree
You fill my every day with glee

The love you give me keeps me warm
Your arms enfold me, safe from harm
There is no need for moneys spent
You are by far my greatest present"

I hug her tight as tears flow free
A Christmas miracle just for me
And vow to treat her in every way
As special as her gift this day
