Order of Operations Lesson Plan

Subject: Mathematics
Grade Level: 6
This lesson could also be used for the following grades: 7, 8

Additional Subjects: None
Instructional Setting: Whole Class
Student Population: At grade level

General Description of Lesson:
This lesson is designed to help students learn and further expand their knowledge of using the order of operations while solving expressions. Students will use the web designed page to learn the order of operations and then create their own web page on what they have learned.

Standards

Content Standards Strand/Domain: Algebra and Functions

Content Standards:

Objectives

Objective(s) of lesson:
Students will learn to solve a numerical expression using the standard order of operations procedures and make a web page which includes the procedures and results from the lesson learned.

Technology

Software Applications: Word Processor, Web Browser
Computer Equipment: Computer, Internet Access, CD-ROM, Projection Device
Video Equipment: Television

Teacher Technology Competency Level (CTAP2 Rubric):

Procedure

Time Required: 6 class period(s) of 50 minutes.

Materials and Resources used by teachers and students:
CALCULATORS

Students and teacher will have the option to use scientific calculators.

COMPUTERS

Students and teacher will have access to computers to learn order of operations.

SOFTWARE

Students have the option of using software to help them learn the lesson.

PENCILS AND PAPER

Students will have regular school supplies to use for practicing problems.

NOTE PAD EASELS

Teacher will have a giant not pads that are secured to easels and have a handful of pens. These will be used for the game so that the student may solve the equation on the paper.

STOP WATCHES

The teacher may have a stop watch in order to keep time for the game.

Preparation for Teacher:
The teacher will need to review the steps when solving equations using order of operations. Teacher must also have the web page already designed in order to project the lesson plan from the computer onto the screen for all students to watch. He or she will also have a set of practice problems ready to give to all students for practicing and demonstrations.

The teacher will also have pieces of paper cut up with each student's name on it. These pieces of paper will be mixed up in a plastic bin so 2 random teams will be created for the game.

The 2 giant note pad easels will already have equations written on each paper(enough to go through one round of the game). Students are to rip off their paper when they are done with solving it to reveal the new one for the next student to work out.

Step by Step Teacher Procedure:
* Set up projection screen and bring up web page on the Internet.

* Review with the students on what they know about numerical equations and order of operation.

* Go through Order of Operations lesson plan with the students.

* Go through example created on web page.

* Allow students to do practice problems shown on the web page with paper and pencil.

* Review answers together.

* Randomly choose names from the plastic bin to create 2 teams for the Operation Game.

Give a pen to the first student on each team. Tell the students the rules of the game:

1) When the teacher says go, the first person in line will run up to their team's giant note pad and solve the equation using order of operations.

2) When the student is done, he or she will tear off the paper to reveal the next equation and then run back to his group and hand off the pen to the next person.

3) The new student in line will come up to the board and begin solving their new equation. Thus, the procedure starts all over again.

4) Which ever team finishes in the LEAST amount of time AND has the most CORRECT answers, wins.

* After the game, the teacher will split the class up into groups with 4 in each group.

* Then, he or she will explain to the class how to make their own web page using the information the just learned from the lesson.

* Once the groups are done, they are to present their page to the entire class. Presentations should be clear, concise and accurate.

* Students will then take an exam for their last assessment.

Assessment

Assessment Type(s): Demonstrations, Projects, Teacher-made Test
Assessment Plan:
DEMONSTRATIONS

Students will have to demonstrate using their practice worksheets that they understand the concept of the order of operations. Demonstrations will also be done in front of the class by a way of a game. 2 students, at a time will come up to the board that has the same equation written. The object is to finish the fastest with the most correct answers on the team.

PROJECTS

Students will create their own web page of the procedures and results of the lesson learned on the order of operations. They may work in groups of 4 to add creativity and content to their page. They will then present it to the class.

TEACHER MADE TESTS

A written exam will be given to determine whether the students have fully grasped the concept of the order of operations.

Enhancement

Notes, tips, suggestions and/or extension activities:
Make this lesson fun!! Students love to play games so really get them excited about it!!
