| Dear Canidates for District 1, Can you please tell me your views on the public school lottery system? Do you support the current lottery system, or do you favor a system that is neighborhood-based? As a mother of two young children, my vote will be based on how you view this issue. Thank you for your time, Richmond District Voter |

| I think everyone would perfre a neighborhood based system. Problem as I understand is that the School District is under a court order to diversify the schools. Until this situation is resolved through compliance or a release from court obligation I unfortunately do not believe that anything can be done. This is a problem that must be addressed by the School Board since school issues are in their jurisdiction. It is unfortunate that many of the canidates seem to infer in their talks and literature that they could change the system if elected. The root of the original problem is that the School District gives preference to school choice to long time teachers instead of revolving them every year or so to each and every school. as a result good teachers try to get into the "good schools" like Lowell leaving the rest for the other schools. If teachers were rotated to different schools and burned out - non productive teachers replaced you would have an effective and efficient school system in which both students and teachers did not care about which school they had to attend, thus allowing for neighborhood schools. | Is a set aside similar to Proposition B a good idea? | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
| A | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
| There are numerous programs and services that are effective and necessary. However taking 2% of the budget and effectively removing it from the limited resourses available without locating a replacement sourse is irresponsible. It would be like taking 2% of your paycheck and not allowing use of the funds no matter what might happen in the future. If you were sick or needed medicine these funds would not be available for your use. Proposition B allocates money for a worthy cause but this is not the way to get it done. San Francisco elects a Mayor and Board of Supervisors to listen and weigh all the costs as well as the current economic situation when deciding how the budget will be allocated. Taking 2% off the top only means that we will loose an equivelant amount in services each year unless additional revenue is identified. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Do you think JROTC should be removed from schools? | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
| A | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
| As a student in public schools i saw the effect JROTC had on students. Some of whom may have dropped out of school without it. I believe it to be a valuable addition to the public schools. Many of the other canidates say they are in favor of JROTC, but unfortunately they do not tell you their opinion will be no more relevant than yours even if they are elected, because the decision reguarding JROTC is in the hands of the School Board not the Board of Supervisors. Hopefully the current Ballot measure V will pass allowing for JROTC to continue. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
