Family Group Record for ELIJAH ROOD Created by Sheri Siebold, September 2004 sherigen@yahoo.com [NOTE: Elijah Rood Sr. is my grt grt grt grt grandfather.] Elijah Rood has been easier to follow, genealogically, due to his involvement in the Revolutionary War. Details on some of his children, however, are more vague. Blancett intermarriage with the Roods needs to be clearer. My own great grandmother, a Blancett, had a family photo album, which ONLY mentions the women ancestors...not the men! Unusual, since in genealogy it's the women who get lost in time, not the men. In my case, it is the opposite. Due to early deaths, lack of land purchases, and no wills there are many blank spaces. The search continues.... ================================================================================ Husband: Elijah Rood (1, 2) ================================================================================ AKA: Born: 9 Sep 1748 - Connecticut Died: 3 Oct 1837 - Marietta Washington Co. OH (3) Buried: 4 Oct 1837 - Marietta Washington Co. OH Father: Mariner Rood (1712-1777) Mother: Mary Cornish (Cir 1721-1800) Married: 22 Nov 1770 Place: Stonington New London CT --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Other Spouse: Eunice Stephens (1755- ) Date: Cir 1768 - Canaan Litchfield CT --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Events --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. He owned land in 1753-1790 in Luzerne Co. PA. (4) EARLY HISTORY OF WILKES-BARRE, PA In 1753 an association called the Susquehanna Company was formed in Connecticut for the purpose of settling the lands in the Wyoming Valley*. They sent agents to explore the region and met with the Indian council to purchase the lands. The land was purchased from the Indians, but Pennsylvania disputed the claim by the Connecticut settlers, saying that they had proprietary rights since 1736. Connecticut claimed that they had jurisdiction over those lands since late 1600's. Without going into the teeter-totter details of the battles that ensued over the land, may it be noted that it was fought between the Connecticut settlers in Wyoming Valley and the Pennsylvanians until about 1784, when the argument between the two factions just ran out of steam. People from both sides just got sick and tired of the squabble that took so many lives. These were known as the Yankee-Pennamite Wars. We don't know for a fact when Elijah Rood came into the Wyoming Valley area, but we know that his father-in-law, Jedediah Stephens was named on a 1776 Tax List, Plymouth Dist. Luzerne Co. PA. Many of the Stephens Family were true pioneers and explored many of the surrounding river areas. Eventually leading them "up river into New York", thereby the reason that we later find Elijah Rood and the Stephens Families in Steuben Co. NY. Other allied families such as the Halsteads and the Scotts were also named in the original grant from the Susquehanna Company. Officially, we know that Elijah is counted in the 1790 Census in Luzerne County, PA. As you will see from the other Land Event, that it took until 1802, before Elijah Rood's land was "recognized" as legal by the Pennsylvania State government! *Wyoming Valley was located on the north branch of the Susquehanna River, originally encompassing all the territory which the Susquehanna and Delaware Companies of Connecticut had purchased from the Iroquois in 1754. The area ran along the north branch from the Lackawanna River southwest to where the north branch meets the west branch of the Susquehanna." 2. He served in the military in 1781 in Canaan Litchfield CT. Said to have served in Ebenezer Allen's Detachment, Vermont. His name appears on the pay roll of Captain Will Hutcen's Company; commencement of pay, 2 Feb 1781, expiration of pay 30 Nov. Time of service: 9 mo. 18 days. [This doesn't make sense to me, so I only include this as a clue, not a fact] Another source said that Elijah Rood served in the RW as a teamster (William T. Elijah Rood (1748-1837) came into Canisteo NY probably around the year (1808) and is listed on the 1810 Census. Around 1817 he went to Marietta, Washington County, Ohio, with his sons, David Rood and Elijah Rood Jr. and died there. More than likely the first of the family to move from Luzerne Co PA to Washington County, Ohio was Elijah Rood's son-in-law, Obadiah Scott III (wife: Thankful Rood). He is listed in the 1810 Census in Marietta,Washington Co., OH and served as a justice of peace there. [paragraph written by S. Siebold] 8.
