Birth name: Britney Jean Spears
Hair color: Blonde
Road to Superstardom Britney was a performer as soon as she was old enough to talk. It wasn't long after that at the ripe old age of four when she performed publicly at her Baptist church. She sang "What Child is This?" As a young girl growing up, she knew she wanted to have a career in music and was spending most of her free time taking singing and dance lessons. At the age of eight, she auditioned for the Mickey Mouse Club, but because of her age was turned down for the part. Fortunately for Britney, one of the producers of the show saw her talent, and helped her find an agent in New York. From there, she and the Spears family moved from Kentwood to New York. While in New York, Britney studied at the Off Broadway Dance Center and at the Professional Performing Arts School where she polished her skills that made her the superstar she is today. She appeared in several television commercials and even in the off-broadway production of Ruthless, based on the 1956 horror The Bad Seed. Britney portrayed an innocent 10-year-old girl who was really a nasty evil girl. In 1992, she appeared on Star Search, where she won her first competition. Unfortunately, she lost her second competition to Marty Thomas. Three years after being rejected from the Mickey Mouse Club, Britney landed her spot as a Mouseketeer. Also joining the talented cast was Keri Russell and Christina Aguilera. Justin Timberlake and J.C. Chasez of N'Sync fame were also on the show at the time. Once again the Spears family picked up and moved with Britney to Orlando. Britney was able to showcase her dancing, singing and acting talent over
the shows two-year run. Once the show was cancelled, Britney and her family
moved back Kentwood. Determined to pursue her musical career, she left high school, and set
out to New York one more time. Like her predecessors, Tiffany and Debbie Gibson, Britney set out on a promotional tour of 26 shopping malls throughout america. She handed out free cassettes containing four of her songs to the audience. She also became the opening act for the boy band N'sync, the group which includes both Justin Timberlake, and J.C; both former Mousketeers. That October Britney's single Baby One More Time was released and launched her into superstardom. Her debut album Baby One More Time was officially released on January 12, 1999. It went straight to Number 1, making Britney Spears the first-ever new female artist to have a Number 1 single and a Number 1 album. By that September, Baby One More Time sold over six million copies. Britney's videos went into heavy rotation and became quick favorites on MTV. With countless TV appearances, media interviews, and a grueling touring schedule, Britney quickly went from an unknown to the Queen of Teen. Baby One More Time has gone on to sell over 20 million copies and has resulted in Britney receiving four major Billboard awards, four MTV Europe awards, a MuchMusic Canada award, and two Grammy nominations. Unfortunately, she lost the Best New Artist category to Christina Aguilera. The success of Britney's debut album didn't slow her down. Not only did she record her second album Oops I Did It Again, she co-wrote a book with her mom Lynn, entitled Heart to Heart, and she even went on a very successful worldwide tour. Oops .I Did It Again was released in the spring of 2000, setting another record. Britney's album debuted at Number 1 and set a new sales record making Britney the undisputed Queen of Pop. Her latest self-titled Britney also debuted at Number 1, selling over 740,000 copies in one week, making her the first solo female performer to have her first three albums debut at Number 1.
