From 'City Shadows'

Childhood in the city.
Hundred year old tenement buildings huddle
and lean into the wind,
their sills long since devoid of the strength of the timbers
that first gave them birth.
Coal dust collects on soles of cheap sneakers
and leaves their imprint on the newly washed linoleum floors,
always covered with newspapers in a futile attempt
to prolong their cleanliness.
