COURSE SELECTION:  This course descriptions are given to facilitate your making the best selection of courses for the year.  In the scheduling process, your top choices will be honored if at all possible.  If you have special concerns, please contact the counselors as soon as possible.  We will work to have the best schedule possible for each student; however, once the schedule has been determined, each student should understand that schedules are set for the school year.

PURPOSE OF GENERAL ELECTIVE COURSES:  These courses arc offered for the purposes of (1) introducing students to a subject area, (2) allowing exploration in a variety of areas, and (3) enrichment.  It is believed that all of the courses offered at Waller Junior High School achieve these goals.  Students desiring intensive and specialized study in these areas will have the opportunity to accomplish that goal during the high school years.

SPANISH:  This is a full year elective course not required for high school graduation; however, some colleges require one to two years of foreign language for entrance.  The goal of this course is to equip students with vocabulary and grammar needed to function in a Spanish-speaking culture.  Students arc encouraged and motivated to develop oral and written competency.  Prerequisite - 8th grade English teacher's signature required. FRENCH:  The primary goal of level I is to help students become proficient in the four basic skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.  Students will also be introduced to the diverse cultures of French-speaking countries.  Prerequisite � 8th grade English teachers� signature required. BAND: This course is designed for fourth year band students to build upon those fundamental instrumental techniques established in the first three years.  There will be a continued emphasis on marching skills, concert literature techniques, and the development of air play for sight-reading purposes.  Students will compete in various parade, concert, and sight-reading competitions.  This course will also include opportunities for color guard, solo and ensemble competition, and honor band audition and participation.  In addition, there will be opportunities for advanced leadership training as well as instrumental clinics for advanced technical studies.  The emphasis is on individual responsibility and preparation for advanced instrumental music.  It will be necessary for students to a  have method book, T-shirt, and black drillmaster marching band shoes.  In addition, a cleaning fee will be assessed.  The school will provide the band uniform. ORCHESTRA  A:   �A� orchestra is a course designed for students who have completed �B� orchestra or a minimum of two years of training on a stringed instrument.  Advanced techniques are emphasized with two octave scales and thirds up to four sharps and four flats with shifting to advanced positions, more difficult rhythm training, and harder literature.  Students are given opportunities to expand their musicianship at this time with Strolling Strings and honor orchestra.  Students participate in an all-city festival involving every string student in the district, district orchestra contest in Stillwater, district solo and ensemble contest in Tonkawa, Tri-State, and a spring contest with the �B� orchestra.

ART I:  Students will discover the principles and elements of art through drawing, painting, design, sculpture, advertising, and pottery.  Art activities using multiple media will serve each student with a hands-on approach to art.  $20.00 will be assessed for art supplies.  (Full Year)

SHOW CHOIR:  This class is designed for ninth grade students and is by audition only.  It consists of singing and dancing and is a performance-oriented class.  Students will participate in competition for show choirs as well as district choir, solo, ensemble contests, and Tri-State Music Festival.  A year of eighth grade chorus, high academic standards, and motivation are prerequisites for this course.  Students will be required to purchase a show choir costume and shoes.  Show Choir camp is encouraged.

CHORUS  This course is designed to give the students the opportunity to learn more about the fundamentals of choral singing.  There will be an emphasis on vocal production techniques, breathing, diction, etc.  Sight-reading music is studied in-depth.  Choreography is introduced in this class.  Students perform three concerts.  They participate in district choir, solo, and ensemble contest as well as Tri-State.  The students must purchase a chorus uniform. GIRLS' ATHLETICS: Students in this class will work to develop their individual and team athletic abilities in the sports of basketball and track.  Teamwork will be stressed.  From late October through the middle of February, the class will be devoted to the practice and playing of basketball.  Track season runs from March through April.  The students will work during class to make the track team and participate in track meets.  The coach will evaluate their abilities and place them in events in order to best help the team.  The high school offers additional sports, which are not at Waller, that freshman girls can participate in�swimming, tennis, soccer, cross-country and softball.  Parents will provide transportation for off-campus sports. Equipment needed includes reversible practice jersey ($12.00 purchased through the school), gray "Waller Athletics" T-shirt, black shorts, and athletic shoes for their particular sport.  Coaches signature required.

BOYS' ATHLETICS:  This elective program was created to give freshman boys the opportunity to participate in competitive athletics at the first level of high school sports.  There are five sports offered at Waller: football, basketball, wrestling, golf  and tennis.  The high school offers additional sports, which are not at Waller that freshman boys can participate in: swimming, tennis, soccer, cross-country, and baseball.  Parents will provide transportation for off-campus sports.  All students that take seventh hour athletics will be in seventh hour athletics for the entire year and will be expected to go through track workouts, unless participating in another sport at the time.  Coaches signature required.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION:   This elective subject is designed to give students the opportunity to develop physical skills in various sport and lifetime activities, as well as knowledge of game concepts and rules.  Each student will be expected to display proper social skills in class such as: cooperating with others, showing good sportsmanship, respecting each other�s own individual abilities, and proper sport etiquette for each sport.  Each student will learn lifetime fitness aspects that will aid in developing healthy lifestyles for all ages.  Uniform required. (Semester or Full Year)

WEIGHT TRAINING:  This elective program is designed to give student athletes an opportunity to develop strength in a sport specific capacity.  Each student will learn a variety of weight-lifting methods and techniques to achieve all possible results, as well as obtaining the knowledge of how to create their own workout routine to reach a desired goal.  Lifetime fitness aspects will be incorporated with the weight training to make this a valuable class when competitive sports are long over.  Knowledge of the various muscle groups and what exercises develop them will be obtained in class discussion and written test.  Uniform required.  Teacher approval required..  (Full Year)

PHYSICAL CONDITIONING (GIRLS):  This course is designed to provide basic instruction in weight lifting and body toning.  It also includes aerobics, conditioning exercises, fitness testing, and various team and individual sports.  Students will gain stamina, a positive self-image, and cardiovascular fitness with an added emphasis on flexibility.  For this class, a uniform is required consisting of a T-shirt, shorts, socks, and tennis shoes.  Official shirts and shorts may be obtained from several places for approximately $10.00 - $15.00.  Teacher approval required.  (Semester or Full Year)

NEWSPAPER:  The newspaper class is a lab class limited to fifteen students.  Staff members plan, write, and edit the stories, editorials, and features they publish in the Waller Eagle newspaper.  Using computers, they make up the pages and finalize the issue.  Student illustrators embellish the paper with original art and cartoons.  The staff finances the paper by selling subscriptions.  To qualify for this class, students must have an A or B in English, have no conduct marks on report cards, and have no disciplinary notices on file in the office.  Recommendations by their teachers and the vice principal are required.   (Full Year)

YEARBOOK:  This class is open to sudents who will be enrolled in the 8th or 9th grade by selection of the yearbook advisor.  All students applying for this class should have a 3.0 GPA or above, have excellent conduct, and have the recommendation of two of their teachers.  A student should also possess strong skills in at least one of the following areas:  written language, art photography, and computer design use.  Above all, students selected for this class should be detail-oriented, highly reliable, conscientious, and have the ability to work independently and under pressure.  The members of the yearbook class will learn the basics of planning, designing, and producing a successful yearbook.   The students spend the first nine weeks learning about copy preparation, layout, and design of a yearbook.  The students spend the second and third nine weeks working with second year staff in producing the yearbook.  Their fourth nine weeks is spent planning the yearbook for the upcoming school year.  (Full year)

CLOTHING: This semester class will be the last time credit can be earned for high school credit since Enid High School does not presently offer a clothing construction class.  Students will be taught advanced sewing skills, material selection, and pattern usage.  Students will sew clothes for themself as well as others.  Students do their own work, and they must meet a three (3) project (projects must be approved by instructor) minimum to pass the class.  The cost of this class is approximately $30.00 and up, depending on the student, their ability, and the projects they choose. FOODS:  This course will study nutrition, detailed study of basics in food preparation, usage of small appliances, and meal management.  Recipes in the following will be included: quick bread, pasta, vegetables, and eggs.  A unit of child development will be included.  Food cost is $ 10.00 for a semester.  Items needed include two packages of index cards, apron, recipe file box, and folder with paper.  Estimated cost for additional supplies is $10.00.  (Semester)

TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION:  Program goals at this grade level will be to insure that students obtain employability skills, explore selected technologies and careers more in-depth, offer job shadowing, visit job-site, and experience school-based enterprise opportunities.  Each student will have the opportunity to go through specialized modules of Technology Education with hands-on experience in fields of construction, communication, manufacturing, biotechnology, and transportation.  There will be additional specialized elements of the Ninth Grade Technology Education Program.  Students enrolled in this course will have an opportunity to specialize in the following areas: graphic design technology, video editing technology, building construction technology, and computer skills. $I5.00 will be assessed for consumable supplies. KEYBOARDING 7th, 8th, 9th:   This semester course stresses mastery of the standard keyboard by touch.  The students will learn correct fingering technique.  Accuracy will be emphasized with speed increasing gradually.  This course is a pre-requisite to Computer Applications I and would be an advantage to students who will be writing school documents in the future.  $5.00 lab fee (semester)

COMPUTER APPLICATIONS I:  This class is designed for the student to become proficient with a current word processor.  The purpose of this course is to enhance the student's typing skills, prepare various kinds of letters, format documents, arrange memorandums, master tabulations, and devise reports.  A short introduction into database and spreadsheet will be covered.  This course would be valuable for the student who will type his/her own research paper or work in the business community.  $8.00 will be assessed for computer supplies.  Pre-requisite:  Keyboarding   (Semester)

MULTIMEDIA:  This course is designed to give students the opportunity to locate information and to incorporate their findings into quality audio visual presentations.  This course will utilize the students creative ability and reinforce skills wich are being taught in core areas which emphasize problem solving.  Students will experience the Internet, HTML, Web Page Design, Power Point and Adobe Photo Shop.  $10.00 (full year class)  or  $8.00 (semester class)  will be assessed for supplies.

CONTEST SPEECH/THEATRE:  This is a performance and technical theatre class that relies on knowledge, creativity, discipline, and dedication as individuals and as troupe members of WJHS Theatre Production Class.  Children�s theatre,  comedy, drama, melodrama and musical theatre will be explored..  It requires out of class rehearsal time.  Productions will be performed on the WJHS stage and/or in the Enid community and schools.  As members of the EHS Competitive Speech Team, the student will compete throughout Oklahoma.  Dues are required for contest.  (Teacher Approval Required � Full Year)  

SPEECH/ACTING:   Introducing the students to nonverbal communications is the main objective in this class.  From pantomime to signing to preparation --- presentation of speeches using basic techniques will help the student with confidence as well as encourage him/her to become a better communicator.  Acting encompasses both performing and technical aspects, and in this introductory class, the students will have opportunity to experience both.  Students will gain knowledge of the basic technical and acting terminology and techniques through in-class projects.  (An opportunity to perform in a mini-production if readiness is observed. )      (1  Semester) 

VIDEO PRODUCTION:   Have you ever wondered what all goes into making a video production (besides a lot of time, talent and dedication)?  Well, wonder no more!  Be a part of WJHS�s Video Production Crew on the Enid Public School�s Network.  Develop your skills in the technological aspects (such as filming, editing, lighting and sound production), and the production aspects such as script writing, make-up and directing, in Enid�s only junior high school video production class.  Pre-Requisite:  basic speech and/or teacher approval.  (Auditions/Interview may be necessary.)  $25.00 will be assessed for supplies.  (Full Year)
