Twice presented to the King and Queen of England.

The Census of 1891 states that Stanley James Payne was 8 years old, which would have made his birth to have been in 1883 insted of 1880 and the notice of his death states that on 3 march 1919 at his death he was 38, which would have made his birth to have been in 1881.

[NI097] In a letter, 19 March 1997, Pat Hase, Secretary Weston-super-Mare Family History Society wrote that Brian Austin, a local and family historian was able to tell her more about the Payne family. Apparently they are descended from John Hezekiah Payne, a Bristol Mariner (dates unknown). His son, Stephen James Payne was a leather merchant in Taunton and his son (Stephen's) born in 1823 was another John Hezekiah Payne, a leather merchant in Colchester. He died in 1909 and his son, Stephen James Payne born in 1848 in Colchester was the one who came to Weston-super-Mare where he died in 1933. Brian tells that in 1990 he was approached by a George Webb who had a diary reputed to belong to your grandfather (Stanley James Payne) and was researching the family.

There is a family tradition in the Paynes that the first son of the first son always has the initials S.J.P.
