Meads (h) 22 April 2006 – Spring Cup semi-final

(1-1 after extra-time – Shene win 3-1 on penalties)
Shene ...... 1
Dan
1 ...... Meads
Saturday the 22nd April was hotter than a rattlesnake in a barrel of red chillies. Into the sizzling frying pan, with its baked earth and unaligned goal posts, which was Barnes common, the players of Shene 3s set to work to achieve something they had not done before, entry to the final of the spring cup!

We had a proper ref, three bottles of luke warm water to share (Come on, it wasn't that bad) and a mile walk back to the oasis which was the Barnes club house. But undaunted and unflinching we set to work against a Meads 9 team determined to achieve the same result as us.

Memorable moments in the match include, but not necessarily in that order:

1 An early lacklustre start, "Oh no I don't want to get my boots dirty" performance by some of us, including Kelso, who I have to say in his defence, is still suffering a bruised foot from a match three weeks ago.
2 The Meads goal. We shall not dwell on that too much.
3 Aaron's superb free kick tipped over the bar at the last moment.
4 A view of the Dave Rowe machine in full flow down the right flank playing 1/2 with Hollo.
5 The rising bulk and screamed "Paulllllll's!!!" of the skipper as he took off to battle away in the engine room.
6 The Dan Sheriff foot-up-the-arse incident (or was it Aaron) which seemed to amuse us for hours.
7 The James Donovan "pussy" team-talk at half-time that turned our melted blood into pistons of pumping steel.
8 Perry on the left hand side was superb, outplaying his opponents as comprehensibly as a bull would stamp on a cobra.
9 Kelso's extra pressure on the Meads penalty siege which gave Dan the chance to score our excellent well struck equaliser.
10 The Sheriff goal celebration and "Come on lads, lets give 151%" speech.
11 The rising team confidence and strength as the game progressed leaving us on top after 90 minutes. It's good to be on top.
12 Hollo and Aarons shots in the dying seconds of extra-time which bounced of the posts.
13 James Donovan trundling onto the pitch!
14 The cool and collected way in which our gate-keepers Bowman and Mark took the enthusiastic fizz out of the opposition and buried it with some fine defensive work.

Then after nearly two hours of being roasted but still fighting fit came the penalties and from the shade and shadows rose the mighty victorious Mozzer. Grouped together in the mid circle we all eagerly watched as Mozzer did a Lehman and saved the first of two well struck penalties, allowing our takers, Hollo, Aaron and Dan to put us through to the final. With the final Meads penalty hitting the post we rushed forward to the sound of "Mozzer the victorious"! We were in the final. Now lets win the damn thing. Cheers.

Kelso

7: Drinks (Part II)
Kelso in his blessed celebratory [...or should that be 'celebrity' – ED] wisdom bought a Newcastle Brown ale in the clubhouse. Whilst in mid-conversation, Kelso utters: "I like this Northern Beer – where’s it from???!!!!!!!”. Classic Kelso! Mozzer

There’s a good reason for Will’s liking for Newcy Brown – in the North-East it’s known as a ‘Dog’ and we all know Kelso’s a regular in the environs of Clapham Common… Dunc
