Born Ebenezer Lewis Shutts, he left Potter County, Pennsylvania with his parents and siblings in 1858.  Lewis was enlisted, at age sixteen, by Capt. Matthews at Vinton, Iowa on the twenty-fifth day of December 1863.  His three years service was to be with Company G, Thirteenth Iowa Infantry Volunteers.  While a member of the "Famous Crocker's Brigade" and following Sherman's Atlanta Campaign, he received several gun shot wounds 25 August 1864 at Kennesaw Mountain, spent time in the hospital at Marietta, GA and at Crittenden Hospital, Louisville, KY and was awarded an Honorable Discharge 4 July 1865.  Disability was listed at 50%.
