| Condoms |
| The single best thing you can do for yourself to keep you safe ( besides abstinence), is to use a condom during intercourse (anal or vaginal). Condoms are not only a form of birth control, but also can help in protecting you from STD's and AIDS. It is recommended to also use a spermicide foam with condoms as well. Some condoms already come lubricated, and some do not, if you need some or extra lubrication, it is recommended to use a lubrication with Nonoxynol-9 in it (eg. KY jelly). Condoms should never be re-used, always put on a new one. Also, if you are switching from anal to vaginal sex, a new condom should be used to avoid a vaginal infection. |
| Oral Sex- tips |
| Oral sex of course is less harmful than intercourse for transmitting STD's, however, don't forget that herpes can be transmitted from genitals to mouth or mouth to genitals. I've read that a recomendation is to NOT floss or brush your teeth for an hour before oral sex, but to do so immediatly afterwards with mouth wash (containing anti-bacterial solutions). It is also known that swallowing pre-cum can increase the risk of tranmitting STD's and AIDS. |
| Birth Control |
| There are many forms of birth control. One is the oral contaceptive - The oral contaceptive is said to be 98% effective when taken properly. The problem with these are that you have to take one everyday at the same time, and if even one pill is missed (one day) they will no longer be effective. It is important to take these regularly. |
| The Depo Prevera injection - Depo Prevera is a hormone injection - taken once every three months. It's advantage is that you don't have to remember to take it everyday. This form of Birth control is 99% effective. however, it also has it's disadvantages, it can cause irregular menstrual patterns, pain in the breasts, and many other side effects.
