Here at Kanyaka Farms, I offer herding lessons to all breeds of working dogs. The lessons are suitable for the weekend or hobby herder who may just need an outlet for their herding breed, or for those who may be interested in trialing their dog with one of the many herding organizations. Lessons are geared towards getting your stockdog ready to trial in AKC, ASCA or AHBA trials, but non competive dogs are also welcome to attend.
My style of teaching helps you learn to handle your own dog. Lessons are designed to teach the dog to fetch (bring) sheep to you and to drive (take) sheep away from you, to a desired location or pen. Dogs will learn directional commands that take them right or left around sheep, how to approach sheep in a calm and controlled manner, and how to lie down and wait for instruction from the handler.
The farm has several training areas:
** multiple small holding pens and chutes to help the dog move sheep in very close and crowded situations.
** 120 x 215 training arena with AKC and ASCA panels set as needed
** 6 acre pasture for open field work, drive panels and free standing pen are also available.
We host 2-3 herding trials a year right here at the farm. AKC trials are scheduled in March and November and an ASCA trial in the spring or late fall. This gives everyone the opportunity to trial their dogs without having to travel long distances. |
