THE TEN COMMANDMENTS
(The Law of God)
Exodus 20:1-17
"God spake all these words, saying, I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage."
ONE: Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
TWO: Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
THREE: Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
FOUR: Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it.
FIVE: Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.
SIX: Thou shalt not kill.
SEVEN: Thou shalt not commit adultery.
EIGHT: Thou shalt not steal.
NINE: Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.
TEN: Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's."
1. Wasn't this the Law of God that was made for the nation of Israel only?
Yes, this is the Law that was given to Israel. But it is also the Law of God from the very beginning. The Scriptures teach that both law and grace have existed since Adam sinned--the law to define and condemn sin, and grace to convert and save from sin. The Bible says that "all have sinned," and that "sin is not imputed when there is no law." Romans 3:23; 5:13. These texts prove that sin has always been associated with transgression of the law, and that it has always been impossible for one to exist without the other.
2. Doesn't the Law just deal with outward behavior or good works, and not with the heart?
Let's think about that question. First, let us discover the meaning of "transgression" of the Law (1 John 3:4). Transgression is a sin which is an act of the will. We choose to sin, we knew better, but did wrong anyway because we really wanted to. Knowing this, if I commit a sin of stealing someone's car, what happened in my heart and mind first before I committed the act? I lusted after that car, then I thought of ways to take the car, then I carried out the actual stealing of the car. So when did I first sin? When I cherished the thought of wanting the car that didn't belong to me, and then I used my head and figured out how to get it. That means the sin started in the heart and mind first. Read this verse:
3. Matthew 15:17-20 "Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught? But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man."
4. So the Law of God is still valid today, even though people are teaching that we no longer need to keep the Law? Does Jesus say anything about this? Yes, for instance, read this verse:
Matthew 5:17-19 "Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil [keep the law]. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven."
