Chapter 6: Shocking News
Cassie looked up when Jake walked in the door from having lunch with Marco. "Hey, sweetie," she greeted him.
Jake walked over to his wife and quickly kissed her. "Hi, Cassie. So, did you come up with anything?" he asked, sitting next to her on the couch.
Cassie sighed. "Yeah, I did. I just got off the phone with my mom, and she said that if two people really love each other, they're willing to sacrifice anything for each other. So, I thought about that for a minute and came up with something." She took a deep breath and pressed her palm against Jake's cheek. "Jake, I love you more than anything and I'd do anything for you. I decided that I'm not gonna go to UCLA to study animal medicine so you can study teaching at NYU. That way, we don't have to battle with us going to two schools that are 3,000 miles away from each other," she said. Hanging her head, she started crying softly.
Jake brushed aside a tear with his thumb and lifted her head up so she was facing him. "You sure about that?" he whispered. Cassie nodded. "Thank you so much. I know how much of a sacrifice this is for you, and I'll never make it up to you," he said, leaning up to kiss her forehead. "I love you."
Cassie wiped her eyes on her sleeve and stood up. "Well, I'll write a letter to UCLA saying that I'm not going," she announced, walking towards the spare bedroom.
Jake sighed and stood up to follow her. Poking his head into the bedroom that they had converted to a den of some sorts, he knocked lightly on the doorframe. "Can I come in?" he said softly.
Cassie turned around and nodded. "Well, nothing's stopping you, is there?"
Jake walked into the room and knelt next to his wife. "Why'd you do what you did and give up your dreams for mine?" he asked.
Cassie pressed "save" on the computer and turned to face him. "Because I love you and I want you to be happy," she explained. "Well, that and the fact that since I grew up around animals, I kind of don't want to work with them for the rest of my life."
Jake leaned up and kissed her. "There's something else, isn't there?" he said. He wasn't as good as Cassie with knowing others' feelings, but he was getting better and he could tell that something else was going on.
Cassie shut off the computer and looked into Jake's eyes. "Yes."
"What?"
"I'm pregnant."
