it didnt work

when i tried to think of you as
just another one who wished
to peel my clothing and my skin
away from pretty bones now
cracked with tired my-stories.

it didnt work

when i tried to think of me
as i was before, peeling off
my clothes and skin to place
my pretty heart in anothers
grimy hand and thereby make
an end to dreams that never ever
let me stay for long enough to live.

it didnt work

when i tried to wrap the old
new age around myself again
and reinvent the self-sufficiency
that had been my armour after
hope had done its bleeding.

it didnt work.
