darkness was not deep enough
to drown me when i hauled
my helpless self onto your shore,
still desperate for destruction.

(Voice melted over agony:
shall I help you?)

words touched my pain-scaled skin,
slid beneath into my burning blood,
then deeper still, where they found
my chained and howling spirit,
snarling in a body sick with fear.

(Voice touched beast within:
may I help you? )

demented creature, hearing Love,
retracted claws from shredded mind
and paused, trembling in the quicksand
of insanity while you unfolded wings,
straightened feathers proudly, and waited.
