The inscription on the marker, located near the site of Matthew McCauley's old home about 3 miles west of the 1939 boundary of Chapel Hill, NC states Matthew was an immigrant from County Antrim, Ireland to NC before the Revolution; he was a lieutenant, 10th NC Regiment, Continental Army; a donor of 150 acres of land for the founding of the Univ. of NC; husband of Martha, who is buried beside him. The tablet erected by descendents read: 1939 COmmissioned 19 April 1777, 1st Lieutenant of the 10th Regiment of COntinental Troops. Captured by the Tories and imprisoned for 3 months. Abraham Shepard was his Colonel. Matthew was at Valley Forge and once was reprimanded for letting a prisioner escape. I am related to the McCauley's through Caty McCauley who married William Trousdale II. Caty's father was Sheriff William McCauley ESQ born before 1740 in Antrim Co, Ireland.

Yes your Caty is the daughter of William, the immigrant to NC from

Antrim, Ire. I am a gggggranddaughter of William by way of his son

Matthew and his wife, Chapman and their son James and his wife Elizabeth

Dillard. They came to TX in 1838 and lived in San Augustine County.

Was pleased to locateCaty's family in the Kelsey book on Robert Wilson

Caty McCauley was the sixth child of William McCauley. She married Wm. Trousdale in 1801 and went to Maury Co., TN. Son John's family came to Fayette Co., Texas and is published in Mary Wilson Kelsey: Robert Wilson 1750 1826 of Blount Co., TN, Houston TX, 1987. William McCauley's will in Orange Co, NC lists William Trousdale as son in law.
