Descendants of William McCauley

Generation No. 1

1. William2 McCauley (McCauley1) was born Abt. 1747 in Carrickfergus, Antrim, Ireland, and died Abt. 1825 in Orange, NC. He married Katherine Aft. 1774 in Orange, NC.

Notes for William McCauley:

Lowrey papers give birth and burial information, as yet undocumented.

William is well documented as a resident of Orange Co, NC because he was active in the community political organization serving as a Justice of the Peace, Tax Assessor, Representative to the NC House of Commons in the Revolution 1778-1782, a State senator 1783-1789 and as a representative to the first convention toratify the US Constitution 1788. He was sheriff of Orange County 1789-1790. History of Orange County, 1752-1952, p 348-355.

His children are known from his will dated 3 Apr 1818 proved 1820 or 1826: William McCauley Executer George Johnston, Alex Gattis, Wm. Kirkland Witnesses Matthew McCauley, James McCauley son: John, Matthew, and Charles Dau: Jane McCollum Grandson: William, son of John Grandson: Benjamin and James, sons of Matthew Grandson: James Reeves; William, son of Charles Dau in law: Catred? McCauley, widow of James Son in law: William Trousdale and Catred his wife All of the above named children and grandchildren have been identified from other sources except the grandson James Reeves. He could be a son of a deceased daughter. There was a Reeves listed in the 1790 census for St. Thomas District, Orange Co, NC.

There is a strong possibility that William was married in Ireland and that he brought several of the children with him to North Carolina in 1774. The marriage records of Jane and James would support this premise because they would have been born before a 1774 immigration date.

There is also a possibility that William and Matthew came to North Carolina by way of Pennsylvania as did the rest of the New Hope settlers.

William McCauley's exact burial place is unknown.

Tom McCauley of Durham NC, (1992) reported that his step grandmother was an avid genealogist who was born in the late 1840's She said that William was buried in the family graveyard on his homeplace. Tom remembers that as a very young child he walked with his father on some overgrown land that had been William's farm, and he remembers that his father told him that the grave was located there. William was in Orange Co in 1776, because he is recorded as a inspector of the Polls in the election on 15 Oct 1776 of delegates to the Fourth Provincial Congress. NC Secretary of State Papers, General Records, Box 302, Provincial Congress 1774-1776, Loose Papers, at NC State Archives.

1850 US Census, San Augustine Co., TX,

household #339,(15 Oct 1850) National Archives Microfilm. Xerox copy in possession. James gave his age as 43 years, birthplace as NC, farmer, and real estate valued at $150.

household #334, Allen Dillard, age 60, birthplace NC. and

household #340 Lewis Vance Greer and John A Greer both of TN. John A Greer was the second Lt. Governor of Texas. It is presumed that the McCauley family was close to Lewis Vance Greer because James and Elizabeth's last child, born 19 Dec 1849, was named Lewis Vance McCauley.

1860 US Census, Shelby Co., TX (Truitt's Store), #83,(25 Jun 1860) National Archives Microfilm. James gave his age as 53 years, birthplace NC, farmer, eal estate valued at $1200 and personal property valued at $693. Difference in counties is because the property is located on the county line. 22 acres are in Shelby county. Some parts of the original property were in the family in 1992. There are indications that James McCauley was a Justice of Peace in San Augustine Co., TX. He witnessed the marriage of his son, William R. McCauley, and Mary E. McDowell 26 Oct 1856. He witnessed another marriage shortly thereafter. Book B, p. 5, Marriage Records of San Augustine Co., TX, Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints, Microfilm #1003680.

Morris, Mrs. Harry Joseph, Founders and Patriots of Republic of Texas, Lineages of the Members of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, p. 358 lists a death date of approximately 1877/another family member recalls a death date of about 1870. James cannot be located in the 1870 US Census. The information given in the above referenced book is often found to be in error.

North Carolina Marriage Bonds list James McCauley married Elizabeth Dillard on 15 Jan 1828. Bondsman was Matthew McCauley N.B. Date of marriage bond does not necessarily match date of wedding.

It is determined that this person is the same James as the one who came to Texas and is listed on both the 1850 and 1860 census in that state from several sources:

1. His wife is given as Eliza or E. W. in those censuses and such is a shortened form of Elizabeth.

2. The will of William McCauley, 3 Apr 1818, lists James and Benjamin as grandsons(sons of Matthew. Orange Co., NC, Book E, #97.

3. The grandson of William's brother Matthew: James (Son of John) was born in 1810 and his history is documented as going to AR and dying there.

4. The James McCauley(married Elizabeth Dillard) is the only other James listed in North Carolina Marriage Bonds in the appropriate time period. A James married Catherine Chapman in 1792; another James married Charity Williams in 1796. Both of these dates are before James(TX) was born.

5. His father, Matthew, (see above mentioned will) signed the marriage bond.

Texas General Land Office shows a Third Class Certificate for 640 acres (Xerox copy in possession). Emigration date is shown as 31 Dec 1839. However James arrived in Texas earlier because his third child, Thomas, was born in Texas in Aug 1838.

On Saturday, 18 Jul 1992, The Alexander Horton Chapter of The Sons of the Republic of Texas dedicated a historic marker at the grave of JamesMcCauley. The grave is located on the original Land Grant near the Harmony Community on County Road 3017. This road is unpaved. It leads north off of FM 711, and is about 12 miles from San Augustine, San Augustine Co., TX.

Notes for Elizabeth W. Dillard:

Birth either in NC or TN 1850 and 1860 census both indicate NC, but one son indicated that mother was born in TN. North Carolina Marriage Bonds list James McCauley married Elizabeth Dillard on15 Jan 1828. Bondsman was Matthew McCauley. Orange Co., NC.1850 US Census, San Augustine Co., TX, household #339,(15 Oct 1850) NationalArchives Microfilm. Xerox copy in possession. Eliza(beth) gave her age as 37years, birthplace as NC. An attempt has been made to relate Elizabeth to Household #334: Allen Dillard, age 60, birthplace NC. Allen Dillard and wife Lucretia Ward Dillard, age 47, had a 15 year old son who was born in TN as wasHenry James McCauley (27 Nov 1831). Allen Dillard was listed in the 1840 Tax Roll for San Augustine Co. (Gifford White, 1840 Citizens of Texas, Tax List, Austin: University of Texas Press, 1983. p.171). This researcher examined, atthe Texas General Land Office, a Land Grant to Allen Dillard in San Augustine Co., TX. dated 1835 for 1 league and l labor. In 1879, Allen Dillard deededover the land. He identified his wife, Lucretia Ward, and two heirs: a son anda daughter. An Allen Dillard is listed in the 1830 US Census Wilson Co., TN,p. 125. National Archives Microfilm. This household had 1 m under 5, 1 m between 5-10, 1 m between 10-15, and 1 m between 30-40; 1 f under 5, 1 f between 5-10, and 1 f 30-40. Further research needs to be done to determine if this is the same Allen Dillard.

Gifford White,1840 Citizens of Texas, Land Grants, Austin: University ofTexas Press, 1983, p. 67 lists several Dillards in San Augustine and Shelby Co. H.H. Dillard, 1839; Howard Dillard, 1838; James Dillard, 1839; Martha Dillard, 1838; Ruben Dillard, 1839; and Wm. N. Dillard, 1841. A printed census index for 1830 US Census Tennessee, p. 52, lists Dillards, but none that appear to be the same persons as the Dillards in Texas. Further research is indicated. 1860 US Census, Shelby Co., TX (Truit's Store), #83,(25 Jun 1860) National Archives Microfilm. E(lizabeth) W. gave her age as 47 years, birthplace NC. There is no indication of the death date of Elizabeth, but she is known to have been buried in the McCauley Family Cemetery, which is located on the original land grant.
