LOCATION: The McCauley Cemetery is six and 9/10ths miles from the San Augustine County Courthouse. Turn right on Farm Road #3017, (Harmony Road), go one and 3/10ths miles to the end of the pavement; go one and 8/10ths miles to the crossroads, take the left turn, and go 3/10ths of a mile to the old McCauley home place. The cemetery is located about seventy-five yards NW of the McCauley home among some large oak trees.
HISTORY: James McCauley, the son of Mathew McCauley, a native of Orange County, North Carolina, was born about 1807. The McCauley family came to San Augustine County from Tennessee and settled on Greer Hill, where he and his wife, Eliza, reared six sons and one daughter. He received a third class headright December 3, 1839.
James McCauley and his wife, Eliza, born 1813 in North Carolina, were the first to be buried in the McCauley Cemetery.
Bill McCauley built a log house near the cemetery and later moved to Center, Texas. Tom McCauley bought the log house when he came from west Texas in 1883. Bob McCauley, son of Tom, reared his family there until his death in 1955. Tom served, and was wounded in the leg, in the Spanish-American War.
The inscription on the Bill McCauley tombstone reads, "Doctor Bill McCauley adn wife, Maary McCauley and family". It has a flat marker with a rock fence surrounding it.
DATA: There are fifteen graves with monuments in this cemetery. Four graves are unmarked but their identities are known; three graves, marked with large stones, cannot be identified.
On July 18, 1992, the grave of James McCauley was marked with a "Citizen of the Republic of Texas" medallion by the Sons of the Republic of Texas, Alexander Horton Chapter, San Augustine, Texas.
