Notes for JAMES MONROE SIGLER:

James M. Sigler

Buried next to his wife, Mary Ann Williamson in Sugartown, Beauregard (formally Calcasieu) Parish, Louisiana at the OLD CAMP GROUND CEMETERY established in the 1920's. The cemetery itself was a memorial to the pioneers of Sugartown (Early outpost of Southwest Louisiana), whose courage and fortitude helped subdue the historic "Neutral Territory" of the Sabine Rio Hondo Strip, claimed and contended by four nations- France, Spain, Mexico and the United States.

Tombstone indicates date of death being November 18, 1822 while other researchers report that date of death was on the 7th day of November.

James M. Sigler settled his family in a very dangerous area of the frontier. It was known as the "Rio Hondo Strip." James Mitchner in writing his historical novel "TEXAS" had this to say:

"But to reach this reported paradise [Texas] from Louisiana entailed great risk, for when travelers came to these final bayous separating the civilization of New Orleans and it's outriders from the wilderness of Texas they faced - - - - - about 30 miles of the most dangerous territories in the Americas. Listen, they were told, 'and listen close!

In the old days they called it the Neutral Ground, meanin' it didn't belong to neither Louisiana nor Texas. They hoped that settin' it up like that, they'd be able to avoid conflict between Americans and Spaniards. But what did they attract? Pirates, murderers, smugglers, women who deserted their families, runaway slaves who stabbed their masters, forgers. Finally they gave it to Louisiana, but it's still scum of the earth. Hell hides in that Strip acrost' the waters."

Fought in the Battle of Mobile where he was captured and sent to a camp in south LA. He had five children with my grandfather John Hamilton who had eight children including my father Eugene. Message: Angela,

I've recently found more info. Elias had 12 children Bollie Edmund, Elias T, John Griffin(my gf),Etta(who married a Fred Hamilton from Arkansas), Willie Eugene, Leon"Tunt", twin Leander"Munt", Cleta, Corene, Nedra, Leota. Don't no the 12th. According to the Confederate pension application Finnis is the correct spelling. Also the headstone for Elias in Dry Creek, shows B:1840, but there are Alabama Census records that show he was born no earlier than 1844. We really didn't know why he settled where he did but searching the 1870 Calcasieu Census shows some Sigler's from Al. who lived around Sugertown. Elias' father Blassengame/Blasencan married a Sigler from Al. I'm thinking there is a connection there. I'm interested in where your husband's connection is with Elias J. please respond.
