arrival at taipeh airport.....
xilian n gensha touch down at taipeh airport. xilian calls out to his father who is there to receive them.

THE SHOW NOW RETRACES THE EVENTS TAT TOOK PLACE 3 YEARS AGO.....
the year 1997, at taipeh airport.....
gensha n her friend, meisu, r on the way to japan for a tour. meisu asked a tour leader to take a foto of 2 of them together.
gensha : quick ah......
tour leader : come.....pls look here... 1... 2... 3... oh!
just when she was about to press the camera shutter, xilin walked
rite past the 2 girls. the girls were taken aback.
tour leader : one more time... 1...2...3...
tis time, xilin deliberately ran n stood next to gensha. he began to walk off but gensha called after him : ay! mister, wat's the matter with u, crazy ah? cant u see we r having our fotos taken?
xilin : never mind, develop the foto n dont send a copy to me
meisu : ay, y r u like tat?
gensha : hateful!
gensha has lost the mood but meisu coaxed her to continue with the picture taking.
next scene....
gensha n meisu r still within the airport premises, sitting down. meisu is practising to speak some japanese phrases from a book.
gensha : wat r u reciting? so boring....dont recite anymore. if u want anything, just use the hands to indicate
meizuo : aiyoh, my japanese is not as good as yours. i m not going to japan to let the handsome men laugh at me
meisu continues practising her japanese phrases.
here comes our hero, xilin. he sits very near to the 2 girls but with his back to the girls' back. they r not aware of his presence. meisu continues to recite the japanese phrases.
gensha : ooh, big aeroplane...how great! tink about it, such a big piece of steel flying in the sky, how wondrous!
xilin turn to look at her n burst out laughing. both girls turn to see who is laughing so loudly.
gensha : it's u!
xilin : miss, do u tink tat plane is made from steel?
gensha (defensively) : not made of steel, i know tat
xilin (goading manner) : then wat is it made of? u tell me ah... u say ah.... u say ah
gensha : y do i have to tell u? wat business is it to u?
a guy approaches, he puts a restraining hand on xilin's shoulder.
guy : ay...little devil, be a little more polite to the ladies
gensha immediately recognize him n he recognize her too. gensha : ah tseng ah? long time no see
ah tseng : hi! we have not seen each other since high school
gensha : rite
ah tseng : ay...your hair has grown longer n now u look more feminine but compared to this lady, still lacking a little bit.....
gensha : oh, she is my university mate, meisu
gensha to meisu : he is my high school senior, ah tseng ah tseng to meisu : hi! how r u?
all tis while xilin listened to their conversation with amusement written all over his face n then he interrupted : big brother, big sister, already so grown up, still acting adorable, so disgusting.....
xilin strolled off. they ignored him n continued chatting. meisu : u r ah tseng? gensha in the past often mentioned u
ah tseng : really? she must be talking bad about me
meisu : oh no, she said your person is handsome, your school work is good, u r captain of the basketball team n every female student in the school likes u
ah tseng : gensha, did u really praise me until so good?
gensha (laughing) : no lah....no lah....
gensha playfully kick meisu for saying too much. meisu : n.....i suspect she was in luv with u
ah tseng : me n gensha? not possible...not possible......
then they were interrupted by a voice telling them its time to check in.
at tseng : let's walk together
inside the plane.....
the 2 girls realized tat they r not sitting together.
meisu : ay gensha, my seat is here
gensha : ah! we r not sitting together. let me go n make the change
gensha turned around n almost bumped into ah tseng.
ah tseng : coincidental, i m sitting here, where r u sitting.......
meisu : how coincidental, i m also sitting here. in tat case, gensha, dont change

gensha was none too happy tat meisu chose to sit next to ah tseng instead of with her. as gensha was moving towards her own seat, she accidentally bumped into xilin along the aisle. she din bother to apologize n plomp herself down in her aisle seat. as she did so she mumbled something under her
breath : ying huan bu san*
xilin to gensha : miss, tis is my seat.
she glared at him, stood up to let him pass thru. xilin sat in the window seat next to her.
gensha : r u travelling alone to japan?
xilin : yes
gensha : y?
xilin : my pa is in japan

xilin : my pa is divorced from my ma. so my pa lives in japan

meanwhile, meisu n ah tseng seems to be getting along well, chatting away. xilin began to show signs of discomfort.

the luggage have been unloaded from the tour bus. xilin approached gensha.

xilin made to go n then turn around n gave her a peck on her nose.

inside the motel room shared by gensha n meisu.....
meisu : gensha, for today's activities, where shall we go n have fun?
gensha : i dont want to go anywhere, i m very tired
meisu : let me go n ask tseng. he may come up with some good ideas
gensha : u go with ah tseng n the two of u have a good time

xilin stands in front of gensha's room holding a single stalk of pink rose. he bangs loudly on the her door. she said in japanese "nobody is here!" but the loud incessant banging continues. she opened the door.....

xilin : i see my father until i feel like vomitting, so i came to look for beautiful big sister
she shut the door in his face. the rose got caught at the door.
xilin : ah... my flower got caught... big sister... my flower...
the door opened again. he went inside.
xilin : wat happened? they?
gensha : gone out!
xilin : they went out n left u alone? tats y ...look at your pitiful
appearance...
gensha : dont u dare say anymore
xilin : u also ah...look at your half dead half alive expression.....i bring u out to play
gensha : who wants to accompany u out to play?

he left the room. she picked up the pink rose, took in its fragrance, sprung up n ran after xilin.
so they spent a wonderful time together outdoor. xilin is at once naughty n cheeky n cute at the same time. gensha paused in front of a small shrine. she closed her eyes, clasped her hands in front of her n prayed aloud : my wish, i can find my true love
xilin mimicked her action n repeated the same words after her. she walked off. he called after her : ay... i was only joking they ate their meal in a jap restaurent. xilin spoke a little japanese. he said the food tastes very nice. he also said eat like this no fun, n suggests tat they play the finger guessing game.
night has fallen. they r back, very near to the motel.....
gensha said : thank you.....these ungrateful n disloyal people i could not care less about them
xilin : rest assured, i wont be like those two, i will always be by your side
gensha said teasingly to him : aiyear!...so adorable.... if u r not so young, i cud fall in luv with u
xilin : i tell u something but dont get angry...really dont get angry.... actually i m already 28. just now i bluff u!
gensha (laughingly) : u stop tis.....

xilin watched while she strugged for a while with the key in the keyhole. then on the spur of the moment, she plants a swift kiss on his left cheek n close the door. he continued to stand outside her door, reluctant to leave. he glanced at his watch n then he knocked at the door. gensha opens the door slowly n cud not see anyone at first. playful xilin quietly stood rite behind her n raised his
voice : wai!
she got a minor fright then laughed.
xilin : i come to look for u
gensha : tomorrow mah?
he showed her his watch : ya, it is just past midnite. it is tomorrow. u asked me to come n look for u exasperated, gensha went back into the room leaving the door slightly ajar. xilin quickly slipped into the room n shut the door behind him.
(intimate scenes......again u have to watch with your own eyes....tame by hollywood std but bold by bollywood std.....to jy fans, some of u may turn green with envy, or some may see red instead)
gensha n xilin continue to spend a lot of time together. once when they were on an outing, xilin asked a passerby to take a foto of him n gensha together.

a male voice is whispering to the owner of the restaurent : lady boss, gensha is behaving strangely lately boss : i tink she has found a boyfriend
it is morning, gensha is half awake, half asleep. her handphone rings. xilin's voice can be heard on the line. there is much static on the line...
xilin (from a distant) : gensha, where r u now?
gensha : i m at home. who is tat?
xilin : wai...wai... gensha....where r u? wai...wai.... she replaced the hp n turn over to continue sleeping but within seconds her eyelids flick open, tinking to herself : wat's wrong with me? because of tis little devil, i have become restless, so useless!
she gets up n goes to the sink. chiding herself in the mirror... gensha : i still cant get over it. even if we r together so wat? he is still so young. as for myself, i have yet to figure out wat i want to do. y talk about pure love?.... (urging herself softly).....gensha, forget him...forget him....
b4 long, xiling is at her door, pressing the bell.
xilin : gensha, it is me, gensha, its me, quick open the door, gensha. i phoned jus now. i know u r at home. quick, open the door gensha, its me quick open the door!
gensha opens the door a little but refuses to let him in. she steeled herself against him.
xilin : tis rose is for u
the door closed.
xilin : .....my flower..... i ........
gensha : u go away! i got no time to keep u company!
xilin : wat r u saying?....i came to find u, arent u happy?
gensha : i have no interest in young guys! dont waste your time!
xilin : u tink tis is all a waste of time? so the truth is u were jus toying with me .....is it very fun? toying with the feelings of an earnest young man...u r so great....willing to spend 4 days with a stranger....if u were not being serious i can pay u money....on the road if we meet, i will act as tho i dont know u! a heartbroken xilin, his head down, started to walk away. gensha had a sudden change of heart n ran after xilin, calling his
name, then hitting him then hugging him from behind.
gensha : xilin! wat's the matter with u? wat r u saying? r u mad? i m so
afraid... u r only 18 i m afraid tat i may become too earnest. i m afraid our being together will not result in happiness
xilin hugged her back tightly : i will definitely not allow u to be unhappy
xilin went straight to gensha's place from the airport so by the time he returned home it was very late. meanwhile his ma has been at home waiting for his return. sitting on the sofa, she was about to nod off when he came into the house....
ma : xilin y so late? i telephoned the airport to enquire n was told there was no flight delay
xilin : no lah, i went to get something
housekeeper : come back already ah? it's good tat u r back

gensha fled from the room.
NOW BACK TO THE PRESENT WHERE GENSHA HAS JUST FAINTED.....
xilian is by her side, calling her name softly, trying to bring her back to consciousness. she soon regained consciousness.

xilian : it's nothing. maybe the flight was too long. rest a while n u shd be alright. wat's the matter, u all rite? dont say anything, just rest a while
pa : ay everything is all rite now. no problem now
xilian to gensha : look at u, first time see mother, u gave her a scare. mother was more anxious than i. all the while she stayed by your side
ma to xilian : u did the same. u stayed by her side all the time. u have not eaten. u n your dad go n eat, at the same time pack something back for us, i will keep gensha company

zilian is pouring a drink for gensha in their apartment.....
zilian : tired?
gensha : i m ok
zilian : jj is tat one that we met at the hotsprings?
gensha : rite
zilian : she n zilin work together on cd rom business?
gensha : ya so coincidental. din imagine will work with her
zilian : zilin long time have not live with her. heard ma say he
has change a lot. i dont understand him. u know tis is his first
project. u give him some help. how is his work performance?
gensha : have not seen his work, i tink not bad
zilian : i m worried u both cant get along
gensha : tis is work, din u wish tat we can get along?
zilian : of course
another day at the office. gensha is standing at the reception
desk. the switchboard ring. the call is for gensha from zilian
making arrangment for 6 pm. another phone rings. it is also for
gensha but from zilin. he wants to come to her office at 6 to
discuss the cd rom project. gensha agree. she call zilian back.....
gensha (twirling her hair with her fingers) : zilian, sorry,
suddenly have to work overtime. dont wait for me. bye
about 10 past 6, gensha is waiting for zilin. he finally rush in
to her office.
zilian is alone at home, wandering aimlessly. look at an old
exercise book of gensha.
back to gensha office. she offer a packed meal to zilin.....
gensha : quick, eat. eat finish then work
zilin : u eat first. i want to discuss about work
meanwhile, zilian prepares his own dinner. eating n thumbing thru the
old exercise book of gensha, he came upon a foto of zilin n gensha in
japan, tucked between the pages of the book.....TIME STOOD
STILL......
in gensha's office, zilin keeps busy talking about the project.
gensha seem unable to concentrate. at times she glance at zilin. at
one point zilin sense tat gensha's eyes r on him. as the camera
close up on zilin's profile.....
zilin : dont look at me like tis, i have feelings. i act quite
well as your brother in law. i myself has grown more mature. how do
u see it? i have given up, dont worry. it is true. we can eat
now. looking at tis, a free japanese takeaway meal tastes the best
gensha reach home. zilian has fallen asleep on the sofa. she
removes the exercise book, touch his hand n he wake up.....
zilian : come back lah?
gensha : sleep already?
zilian : just resting (look at his watch) so late already
gensha : tis case is so bothersome. zilin n i r going mad
zilian : zilin also there?
gensha : uh
zilian : r u getting along lately?
gensha : can do. shall i make something for u to eat?
zilian : no need. u r tired, take a shower n then rest
zilian invites meisu for a drink in a cafe.....
zilian : pls take a seat
meisu : y r u looking for me?
zilian : can u tell me about zilin n gesha?
meisu : zilin n gesha? they r ordinary friends. there is
nothng.....
zilian (interrupted her) : i have seen their past foto n i also
know they r not ordinary friends
meisu : gensha n i met zilin about 4 yrs ago. tat time we have just
graduated n we went together to japan for a tour. later i met tseng
n 2 of us went out together so gensha n zilin could get along well
but when we return to taiwan.....(the music rises to a crescendo n
drowns out the voice of meisu)
zilian : so it was my ma
meisu : tat was how it is
zilian : i understand. thanks
morning at the parents' home.....
pa speaking to ma : do u sense tat there is something not rite
with zilin? he works every nite n he cant wake up in the morning
ma : i jus woke him up. the rest i dont want to bother. look at
him, he is getting thinner n thinner. his meals r not regular. i
feel the heart pain
pa : as the saying goes, the son is not as good as the father. i
know he must be having relationship problems. when he encounter such
problems, he is not at all like his pa. those years back when i
court girls, i had tat air of grandeur
zilin walk in.
zilin : talk so much, u still end up marry one person, ma
ma : u r awake
pa : y did u face up the cards? (a chinese metaphor is being used
here)
zilin : ma, i want to drink wine
ma : no! how to drink wine on an empty stomach? drink hot soup
first
zilin : both of u r more n more naggy
pa : tis is y your ma n i has been at each other until now
zilin : so wicked, i feel like vomitting
ma : here, drink tis hot soup
zilin groan n start having the soup.
pa : u will be graduating soon. after graduation wat r your
plans?
zilin : have not decided but probably have something to do with
computers
ma : our zilin is no longer the same. b4 he was just "floating"
around, undecided wat to do but now he is more mature
zilin : i m no longer a child
ma : i know tat. next time watever your decisions, ma will respect.
i wont object
zilian is walking along the street, preoccupied with his tots after
the meeting with meisu. his head resonates with snatches of past
conversation of gensha, zilin n himself.
gensha n meisu drinking in a cafe. meisu confess to gensha.....
(an emotional scene for karen mok. her tears came just like tat
*snap finger*. tis is the first time, watching the show, tat i was
moved to tears. there will be a second time.)
meisu : gensha, sorri but under the circumstances i have to tell
him. he told me not to tell u but i understand his feelings. he is
very understanding of u but the matter of u n zilin must cause him
much pain
gensha : i should have told him earlier
meisu : gensha, i know u still love zilin n i also know u have
used all your strength "ping ming" to suppress yourself. i believe u
r feeling the pain more than them but if matter is not resolved, the
hurt will get more n more unbearable
gensha nodded her head in agreement : i know tat
such a busy day in gensha's company. the phone ring one after
another non stop. gensha is waiting for zilin in her office n
resolve in her mind, "must come to a conclusion. whether feelings
or work, two person alone working together, tis must be the last
time".
zilin arrives n both of them started to discuss the work.
once again gensha remind herself, "this will be the last time zilin
n i work together. i want to produce good work so as to let him tink
tat working with me will have no regret, becos tis is the last time".
gensha's colleague knock on the door : gensha, we r leaving. the
keys r in the drawer. outside very strong wind, have to be careful
gensha : u go first, we r almost finish here. bye
zilin : your face color not too good. do u want to go home first?
since outside heavy wind n rain....
gensha : no need, no need, we r about to finish
zilin : r u sure?
gensha : uh
zilin : good, then we continue
her handphone ring. zilian is calling.
gensha : ya, we r still racking our brains. flooding? cant be
lah. u dont worry, about to finish, very quick. once finish will
come back, u dont come over, bye
zilin : my brother call? he should be worried tat u r with me
gensha : outside typhoon, he is of course worried
zilin : i tink we should go back first. tomorrow.....
gensha (still insistent) : no, no need. we continue. let's
finish tis
zilin : but
gensha : really!
zilin : good
gensha : where were we?
zilin : just now i said.....(so they continue working)
zilian is listening to radio reports about the bad weather. he is
worried n contemplating whether to fetch gensha. he is driving now.
news about bad weather conditions coming from the car radio.
zilin n gensha r still working the office. gensha giggled....
gensha : i din hear wat u say......sorri
zilin : y?
gensha : let me go n get some coffee, u want some?
zilin : good ah
coffee break time.
zilian is driving in the heavy downpour, on his way to gensha's
office.
gensha bring a cup of coffee to zilin n sits down beside him on the
sofa. zilin continue to talk about the work to gensha but she is not
listening. she lean her head back against the sofa, close her eyes n
seem to have drifted off. seeing tis zilin remove the cup from her
hand...
(oh oh, watch wat follows, dont blink your eyes even!!)
zilian has arrive n is making his way thru the office trying to
locate gensha's whereabout. he see light coming from a room. he
hesitated, took a peep n saw !!!!!!!!!!!!....zilian withdrew quickly,
stunned!!
gensha open her eyes just in time (to zilin) : let's get back to
work
zilian use his laptop to type a letter. he is requesting for a
transfer back to japan due to personal reasons.
the next day in the conference room, zilin is talking to the lady
boss of the language centre. also present in the room r gensha n
jj.....
boss : u all have done well, i m very satisfied. gensha, i will
start using tis from next month.

zilin : dont mention it
boss : so the 2 of u continue your leisurely chat
jj (high 5 zilin) : in order to celebrate the successful signing of
tis contract, tonite let me treat. gensha u have helped us a lot.
will u join us? r u waiting for your husband? r u in a hurry to go
home?
gensha : never mind, i can come. we should celebrate tat our
cooperation has a successful conclusion
jj : tats nice. i know of a very nice japanese restaurent altho it
is a bit far. u dont mind do u?
gensha : does not matter
jj : let's go!
zilian has finish his lecture. he say to the class : finally, i
want to thank u for your support n help this past year. i do hope i
can return quickly to taiwan n cooperate with all of u again.

outside the japanese restaurent.....
gensha : i used to work here
jj : shall we change to another place?
zilin : never mind. afterall i want to try the food here
gensha : ok, here then
the 3 of them enter the restaurent n sat down. they r served by the
lady boss who was gensha's former employer.
boss : welcome, welcome. hey, its gensha (they hug each other)
gensha : long time no see
gensha excused herself to go to the restroom.
boss to jj : gensha worked for me b4. seeing her now i m v
happy.....eh? arent u gensha's previous young lover?
jj : young lover? ay! i wud like to see your previous immature
appearance
zilin : stop bothering!
boss to zilin : din tink u will be together again. u must treat
gensha well bcos tat time she suffered so much for u
zilin : suffer? wat suffering?
boss : your ma came to the restaurent n wanted gensha to leave u
zilin : my ma?
boss : gensha, tis child, is an honest person. for the sake of
your future, she decided to leave u. u cant imagine how pitiful she
was then. bcos the opposition was your ma, u cant blame her. but
now tat u r grown, u dont need your ma's protection. there should
not be any more obstacles in your relationship. tats so good.
today i must treat!
gensha return from the restroom. she overhear wat the boss has told
zilin. gensha n zilin exchange looks. jj excused herself.
jj : i tink both of u have something to discuss. i leave first. i
will give the treat another time
zilin look at gensha who try not to look at him (wow! if looks
could kill!).
zilin (grabs her hand roughly) : y din u tell me?
gensha : let go of me!
zilin (furiously) : look at me!!! was it really my ma??
gensha : it was my own decision to leave u. it has nothing to do
with your ma
zilin (shouting) : y r u still speaking up for her?
gensha (calmly) : i m not speaking up for her
zilin (bangs the table with his hand) : wat m i doing! like an
idiot! bcos of all the hate i change one girl after another.... at
first becos of u, i wanted to be a decent brother in law but i know i
cant do it! everytime i tink of u in my brother's arms, i feel so
jealous tat i m on the verge of madness! from the beginning until
now, u r the only one that i like
zilin hug gensha tightly from behind : i want u....i know like tis
is a betrayal to my brother but ask me go to hell, i m willing
gensha (as she shakes zilin off) : u should not say such things
zilin (in a resigned voice) : listen to me. i know tomorrow u r on
leave. i wait for u. if u dont come i will give up. then for the
rest of my life i wont appear. i have decided to further my
studies. maybe tis decision is a bit late but i should give some
tot to the future u have plan for me. if tomorrow u come we will
descend to hades together but i will be the world's happiest man
zilian at home, staring at a piece of paper he hold in his hand.
gensha return. he hear the sound of her high heels walking towards
the bedroom. zilian go in search of gensha. no words were spoken.
they hold each other for a long time.
(i m reminded of the song by ex boyband, Boyzone, where the lyrics go
like tis....u say it best when u say nothing at all....)
inside a bar, zilin n jj r drinking. jj receive a call from her
customer scolding her about work. she manage to pacify her
customer.....
jj : without u, the company will be helpless but i have no solution
since u want to further your studies
zilin : sorry about tat. tis time i cant help u
jj : forget it lah. after u have studied new skills n methods,
come back n i dont have to raise your salary, then i will forgive u
zilin : tat's not a problem
jj : when r u leaving?
zilin : next month end
jj : tat is to say regardless of whether gensha appear or not, your
decision to go to usa will definitely not change
zilin : i hope she will come. i hope to leave together with her.
if there is a god i will plead with him to give me another chance to
luv her. i know i wont be able to gain the understanding of my ma n
brother but i have no other way. i just want gensha to be together
with me
jj : but if her final choice is your brother?
for a long time, zilin did not answer (see the master of facial
expressions at work here!).

zilin is in a room waiting for gensha. he sit on the bed, a single
stalk of rose lying beside him. there is knocking on the door.
zilin open the door n gensha enter the room but still remain near the
door. she stand b4 him now.....
gensha : i came to say goodbye.....starting.from today i wont see
u again
zilin (suppress his emotion) : i know .....wat do u want to
drink....at least have a drink with me
gensha : i have also separated from your brother.....i just cannot
make my choice so i have decided to be alone
zilin (emotional) : do u know wat u r doing?
gensha : i have never been more clear in my mind as to wat path i
want to take
zilin : y do u want to do tis? y r u so selfish?
gensha : i have already decided
zilin (raise hs voice) : this is not your decision, u just want to
escape!
gensha : say watever u like. i have already hurt your brother
deeply. i cant divorce him n then be with u
zilin : if u choose my brother i will understand
gensha (blurted) : but the one i love is u
(the whole world stop spinning....zilin has waited all these years to
hear her say these words.....no heaven above, no earth below, just a
double bed separating the two star-crossed lovers. they look at each
other from across the bed. just for a brief few seconds, u can
almost sense two hearts beating as one)
gensha lose her composure n goes over to him.
they embrace, cry n kiss for a long time. as usual it is gensha who
came to her senses first.
gensha : thank u for giving me the courage to live on.... thank
u....goodbye
zilin (a last desperate attempt to hold on to her hand) : i wont
give up.....i told u b4 if u din come i will give up but now u r in
front of me... tat decision is yours but my decision ...... for the
rest of my life, i m not going to give up. i will go for my studies
n quickly complete my computer course then later i will definitely
come n find u. no matter where u go i will find u....just like
b4.... knock on your door, bodily push your door....until u run to
me n tell me the one u love the most is me
they embrace each other tightly one last time n then she was gone.
(zilin is going thru great angst. hear the sound of sobbing.....its
me lah, not him, crying for the 2nd time. u? cry thru out is it?)
zilian is leaving. he put his luggage into the car boot. in the
background gensha's voice reading a letter to him.....
it was all my fault. clearly has promise to live together but have
hurt u. your lov is ever so openhearted. if it were not so i wud
not have hurt so much. no matter who i choose i wont be able to find
my true true freedom but pls believe me, it was not bcos i want to be
with him tat i leave u. i cant allow myself to hurt u anymore, cant
continue to be your wife, feel your love n affection. tis is my way
of punishing myself

gensha, i said b4 there is only one person who can make me happy or
unhappy n tat person is u. within tis short period of time u have
given me happiness. u must remember if one day u r willing to give
me a lifetime of happiness pls come back to my side. i will always
have, in my heart, a place reserve for u
