February 7, 2004 2/4 Bringing F4 in the Philippines by Yamaha by Billy Balbastro Norkis Trading (the local distributor of Yamaha in the country) is ironing out plans of bringing F4 here in the Philippines. F4 is the international endorser of Yamaha and their Switch campaign has already started. We went to the Yamaha Launching of Crypton R and Crypton Z held at Merk's Bar (Yes, this is Richard Merk's bar) in Greenbelt 3 last Monday. And according to Manuel (Boy) Albos, Jr. of Norkis, they will launch Yamaha Novo in May. F4 will also come to this big event, may there be a concert or not. We also learned from Boy and Joel Sarmenta (Marketing Manager) that F4 will have a new TV series in Taiwan. They will be in motorcycles in this series. Incidentally, Ka Alfie (Brother Alfie) and Zar Baisas are reminding us that Jerry Yan's movie, Magic Kitchen, where he is the assistant cook, is the Valentine presentation here in Metro Manila. February 6, 2004 Zai zai album Zaizai's 2nd album Remember I Love You sold 500 000 throughout Asia. In order to thank the fans, Zaizai went to Singapore a few days ago for an autograpgh session and it attracted near 10 000 fans. He signed 8000 autograpghs in 2 hours. This coming Sunday, 8th Feb, Zaizai will go to Hong Kong again for another Remember I Love You Valentine's card autograpgh Session. Sony specially relesed 4000 limited edition Remember I Love You Valentine's Special edition and a "Zaizai xin1 yi4 Valentine Card" is included inside. Fans can then use this card as a Pass to go to the autograpgh session. Each fan is limited to a maximum of 4 Valentine's card. There are fans who did not manager to get this special edition of the album and requested Sony to release more. However Sony could not do much as this was limited edition. Earlier, Zaizai's pyjamas was also limited to 10 000 and was snatched up by fans and it was even auctioned on the net for as much as 10 000 Taiwan currency. Hong Kong fans plan to wear the "Zaizai Pyjamas" to attend the autograpgh session on the 8th After knowing that Zaizai will have an autograpgh session in HK, the fans used all means to find out where the location will be and also kept calling Sony and their HR department and even requested for bigger areas to hold the autograpgh session. In fact, where Zaizai had his autograghed session in Hk last year, the streets was flooded with fans and this time around, Sony got to make wiser choices with regards to where to hold the autograpgh session. The 2004 MTV Asia Awards, of course! The largest music fest in Asia returns to Singapore for its third year. If last�s year party is anything to go by, it looks like this year�s show is shaping up to be a blast again. Come 14 Feb, anybody who�s anybody is going to be at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, lovin� it up with a glittering list of stars. WHERE�S THE LOVE? The MAA will be running with the love theme this year. Why love? Says David Flack, MTV Asia�s senior Vice President of Creative and Content, �2003 has been a bit of a tough year and it felt like a really good thing for us to do.� But don�t be expecting fluffy pink hearts floating all over the arena. Instead, �imagine some psycho combination of the sci-fi cult Barberella and Japanese love hotels,� reveals David. And the trophy? �This year, we�ve got a cupid but it�s not your normal sweet cupid,� he says. �It�s going to be a musical cupid and he won�t be built like an action man.� BE MY GUEST Going for the same east/west host combination like Shaggy and Coco Lee last year, this year�s emcees will be F4 heartthrob Vanness Wu and prolific singer/songwriter Michelle Branch, who�s also contesting for Favourite Female Artist. Also keep your eyes peeled for the stellar cast of presenters and performers. Taiwan�s hottest boyband 5566, Canadian punk pop quintet Simple Plan and Poptars dropouts- made-good Liberty X will be there to grace us with their presence. Among the nominees attending are rap crew Black Eyed Peas and Blue, both nominated for Favourite Pop Act, Stacie Orrico (Favourite Breakthrough Artist) and Gareth Gates (Favourite Male Artist). February 6, 2004 ZZ in S'pore LAST week, The New Paper offered a rare opportunity to Vic Zhou's fans by promising to ask him their burning questions when the F4 star came to town to promote his second album, Remember I Love You. And my, were we bombarded: We received more than 100 questions, some from fans in the region who read the online version of our paper. Receiving even more phenomenal response was his album, which has sold over 500,000 copies Asia-wide including 20,000 copies here. When we told Vic we'd be asking him questions from his fans, the dreamy star perked up and responded with a resounding "hao!" (good). So, here are some your questions answered: If your newly-attached girlfriend were to fall in to the water together with a long-time female fan, who would you save first? Vic: (frowns) That's so hard! Er, er, I'll just have to jump in with them, so I won't offend either one! Anyway, the weather is so hot, so a swim would be nice. Why do you always get babes to star in your music videos? Do fans have a chance too? Because my company wants my music videos to be picture perfect and more dreamy. Fans have a chance too. Some of my co-stars are my fans. Who says I can't have model fans (laughs)? You have a new song, Mama Says. Do you listen to everything your mum says? Only the good things (laughs)! I'm all grown up so I can tell what's right and wrong. My parents have always given us a lot of freedom. Luckily, my brother and I never went astray. Unless my mum says, "I need more allowance", then I'll have to do something. Who would you say Remember I Love You to? My wife, my girlfriend� but that's in the future, lah. Are you happier now than during your pre-showbiz days? Before joining showbiz, I was a carefree student. Life was simple and happy then. Now I have a lot more on my mind, so I'm not as happy. So what I'd do is to tease everyone else around me until they explode in laughter, and that makes me happy. If you can exchange your fame for something you don't already have, what would you want? To be an ordinary person whom nobody knows. Then I can hold my girlfriend's hand and we can go shopping (smiles with a dreamy look in his eyes). Will you quite showbiz for love? That's not necessary, lah. I'll just fade out and slowly enjoy the romance. There's no need to quit. Tell us the truth about your new rumoured girlfriend, Xu Weilun, who was caught with you in a night club! My love life is a blank. Really, the mere mention of it makes me sad (chuckles). As for Weilun, we went to a pub to drink tea and chat with seven to eight friends. Rainie (Yang) and Brian (Zheng) were also there, but the paparazzi just took a picture of Weilun and me, and wrote that we had an affair in some night club. That's hilarious! It's just a friends' gathering. What do you think of all those fans who started queueing for your autograph session here a week in advance? I'm thankful to them, but isn't it still Chinese New Year? Why are they still wasting their time? Why not go out with parents or friends instead? Maybe next time we can try a new method, say queueing by number? What is ideal fan behaviour to you? You can chase me, but don't go overboard. Like when I go home, I'd like to have some privacy. I don't wish to see fans loitering outside. Seeing the paparazzi is already a big headache. Do you think you can continue to stay in showbiz without these fans who keep chasing you? I don't object to fans chasing me, but I don't need them to imagine me as their boyfriend or husband. I'd advise them to face up to reality. That's just their dream. It's impossible. Which part of your body is out of bounds to fans? Shaking hands is okay, but if fans try to hug me, I'd feel scared. What kind of behaviour in a girl turns you off? When she tries to attract attention by talking very loudly or doing exaggerated gestures (flaps his arms in deomostration). That's not cute at all. Which part of the female anatomy attracts you? I can only see the face, hands and legs. It's weird to look at someone's legs first, so I guess, the face. No need to be pretty. It's the eyes that I'll notice, if they're bright and clear. What makes you cry? When was the last time you cried? I just cried last Friday. Any trivial thing can make me tear, like if I see a lonely old man or a pitiful kid. I'll keep thinking about them and the tears will just flow. I'm just too sentimental (sighs). When will you and the other F4 guys(Jerry Yan, Vanness Wu and Ken Zhu all of whom shot to fame after starring in the drama Meteor Garden) work together again? We definitely will, but you many have to wait. I like working with the three of them. We have a great time together. When is it your turn to make a movie? The other three have all made their own movies. Mine will take some time. My company is still in discussion. If I can choose, I'd play a schizophrenic character. My lead actress? Jerry got to work with Sammi Cheng, and I wish I can too (laughs with a hint of longing in his voice). Why? Because I like her. I like her acting and her songs. I'd sing her songs when I visit karaokes! Will you cut your hair for a role, like Vanness did in his movie, Star Runner? Vanness looks so suave with his new short hair! I'm so jealous! (Laughs) Maybe I should emulate Andy Lau and shave my head ? Then I can challenge Vanness to see whose hair is shorter! Will you do an English song soon? (Vic chokes with laughter)�Not very likely. It'd probably take me a long time to record, like five years maybe? I did learn English in school, but it's all very basic. Will you sign with a new company if it offers you a lot of money? No. For me, it's very simple. If I feel my company takes good care of me, I'll sign on. I wont' negotiate of better terms. February 3, 2004 Yan Can Cook source : the sun (malaysia) dd mon 19 jan 2004 (pg 35) lead singer of taiwanese f4, hunky jerry yan is making his movie debut in magic kitchen, writes peter yap if there is a device to measure the popularity of tall n handsome singer-actor jerry yan, it should read 'very hot'. the taiwanese hunk is currently starring opposite hongkong big names such as andy lau n sammi cheng in his first movie, magic kitchen. in the movie, he plays an assistant chef who falls for yau (played by sammi cheng), a successful chef n owner of restaurant. however he faces competition from yau's ex-boyfriend (played by andy lau). yan, 27, was in kuala lumpur last friday for a series of one-to-one interviews with the local media. accompanying him was fellow actress and co-star maggie q. looking casual in a green sweater, yan was his usual quiet n cool self. perhaps he was tired as he had rushed from the airport. he didnt give anyone a smile. but when he did, his killer dimple on the left cheek showed. yan is one-fourth of the taiwanese pop boy band f4, which starred in the drama series meteor garden. his showbiz career took off in 2001 when he bagged the role of the series' main character dao ming si, the super rich boy who falls head over heels for poor girl shan tsai. f4 n meteor garden r incredibly popular not only in malaysia n their native taiwan but also in china, hongkong, singapore, the philippines, indonesia, as well as canada n the US. THIS IS YOUR FIRST MOVIE ATTEMPT. yes, i totally enjoyed myself on the film set of magic kitchen. i'm lucky my management company got this role for me. HOW DIFFERENT IS IT FROM STARRING IN A DRAMA SERIES? there's more freedom working in a movie unlike in a drama series, where you stay focused on just one character for a long, long time. HOW WOULD YOU RATE YOUR PERFORMANCE? i did okay, but i believe there's lots of room for improvement. i would give myself 10 marks out of 100. (jerry is rather modest.) IS IT TRUE THAT SAMMI CHENG RECOMMENDED YOU TO PLAY HER ASSISTANT CHEF? i never did ask her. i read about it in a magazine. if it's true, i must really thank her. not just her, but also andy lau and nicola cheung. nicola, especially helped me with my cantonese. she read the dialogue line by line for me. BUT YOUR REAL VOICE WASN'T USED IN THIS MOVIE. i couldn't express myself that well, so the director (lee chi ngai) told me to speak in mandarin during the film shoot to avoid wasting time. HOW WOULD YOU RATE YOUR CANTONESE? very bad. i'm still learning. DO YOU PLAN TO STAR IN MORE HONGKONG MOVIES? i have a few scripts in hand. but i'm not sure what role i'll take on next. HOW WAS IT LIKE WORKING WITH ANDY LAU? he's a real surprise. he keeps the atmosphere lively while filming. he's a good actor. WHAT ABOUT SAMMI CHENG? she's like a little girl. more like a kid. she's real fun to be with. she will take the initiative to chit-chat with you. she likes to smile and there's no pressure working with her. YOU PLAY A CHEF IN THE MOVIE. DO YOU COOK AT HOME? i do cook a little when i'm not tired. but i'm hardly at home. i'm constantly travelling in asia for work. IN THE MOVIE, YOUR CHARACTER FALLS FOR AN OLDER WOMAN. WILL YOU GO FOR SOMEONE YOUR SENIOR? age doesn't matter. if i date someone older, it's fated. morever, i can't predict who i'll fall in love with. it could be someone much younger or otherwise. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF YOUR 'VOICE' IN THE MOVIE? initially it was strange hearing myself speaking in cantonese. but after watching magic kitchen thrice, i'm accustomed to my 'voice'. SOUNDBITES * on chinese new year i'll be spending time with my mother in taipei. * on releasing a solo album i'm not in a rush, although two members of f4 (vic zhou and vanness wu) have released their solo albums. * on his new year wish of course, i hope that my debut solo album will sell! that's my main wish for this year.
