Adverbs tell us something about (modify) a verb,
adjectives or other adverbs. But it modifies a verb more often than it
modifies an adjective or an adverb. An adverb may answer one of the
following questions: Where did the action take place? When did the
action take place? How did it take place? To what extent (or how
long) did it take place?
Where? I went inside. He sat down. He
stood nearby.
When? He arrived immediately. Then he stood up.
We arrived early. She reported late. Now I am ready.
How?
: We worked slowly. The accident occurred suddenly. He wrote
his name carefully.
To what extent? : You should always come.
We must never be late. The escaped convicts ran far. He had
scarcely begun the lesson.
Many verbs are made from adjectives by
adding ly. Adjectives: quick, serious, careful, quiet, heavy,
bad Adverbs: Quickly, seriously, carefully, quietly, heavily,
badly He is a serious boy. (adj) He spoke seriously. (adv) Not
all words ending in ly are adverbs. Some adjectives also end in ly:
friendly, lively, elderly, lonely, silly, lovely. I saw an elderly
man. A lonely child is never happy. We sang a lovely song.
Some adverbs (clean, far, fast, straight, etc) do not have ly. A
deer runs fast. She has travelled far.
Some have two forms, one
with and the other without an ly (late/lately, loud/loudly, slow/slowly
etc.) Rugie came late. I haven't seen her lately. For the
reasons mentioned above, adjectives and adverbs are best recognized by
their functions in the sentence. We can also use adverbs before
adjectives and other adverbs. This book is reasonably cheap. (Adj +
adv) I am terribly sorry. (adv +adj) She walked quite slowly. (adv
+ adv) He ran incredibly fast. (adv + adv) An adverb can also be
used with a past participle. They were seriously injured. It
was badly organized. It was poorly written. We were completely
surrounded. An Adverb can modify an adjective: He is a very serious
student. The cat is an extremely fast animal. Your method is
completely wrong.
Interrogative Adverbs can be used to introduce a
question: Where were you? When did you go? Why did you say
that?
Note that some words (fast, hard, late) are both adjectives
and adverbs, depending on how they are used. Kadie is a fast runner.
(adj) Kadie runs very fast. (adv) Mary is a hard worker. (adj)
Issa works hard. (adv) The train was late. (adj) I got up
late. (adv). Exercise 6 1. Those who attended Anum's party
