Typical day at Havencrest.... |

I don't have to be at work until 7 a.m., but I am pulling into the parking lot by 6:30 as usual! Can't start the day off without a cup of coffee, so as soon as I walk in the door, it's off to the staff lounge, in hopes that it is already made. After getting my coffee, down the hall I head looking in each room as I go. Checking to see who is still here and who isn't. The midnite shift is finishing their last rounds when I arrive. So I say "Good Morning" to all. I still have some time to kill, so I step out the back door with my coffee and light up the bad habit I have, a cigarette. By now, the rest of the crew is headed in, so it is now time to punch in for the day. |

It's 7 a.m., time to get report from the last 2 shifts. Assignments are given, then I am off to start my work. We begin by making sure everyone is set up for breakfast. Make sure they are dried, pulled up and in the right position. A few of the girls have time to get some of the residents washed before the breakfast cart comes up, so while they are doing that, we take the few residents that eat in the diningroom, down for breakfast. One girl stays on the floor to answer call lights while the rest of us make sure everyone eats. Breakfast is usually done by 9 a.m. so our 10 minute breaks begin! |

Breaks are over and it is time to get back to work. By this time, the call lights are ringing and you try to get them answered while in the meantime you are checking once again to make sure everyone is dried or has used the bathroom and repositioned. So then finally you get to start doing your A.M. care. Where I work, you can have as many as eight residents or more that you are responsible for. I wash or shower the residents, according to their care plan, do range of motion during this time, then dress and get them up for their daily activities. I get as many done as possible before it is time for me to go to lunch. And many days, you are so busy that you never get to lunch on time. While doing all of this, you are also busy helping your co-workers when needed. Many of the residents take two to do transfers into chairs or into the bathrooms, whatever! Never a moment goes by when you aren't doing something! Believe me! And you never know where the time went. Now it is time for me to go to lunch. I am supposed to have a half an hour, but I am lucky if I can take 20 minutes. |

You've guessed it! Lunch is over for me and it's back to the ballgame! Whatever I didn't get finished before I went to lunch, I have to try and get it all done now. Not only am I trying to finish my work, I am helping others to get up for lunch, answering call lights, taking people to the bathroom, making beds, seeing that the ones that are still in bed are positioned right for their lunch, and getting the other residents down to the diningroom for theirs! And never a day goes by that you have to weigh someone! We have a lovely Dietician that always needs someone reweighed! I even went as far as to make her a poster for her bulletin board, calling it Susan's Reweigh Station! But, back to the story! By now, it is 12:30 and everyone is being fed once again! Lunch is normally over by 1:30. We are lucky and have some family members that come in to help feed their loved ones. Which helps out a great deal. And is greatly appreciated by all. |

Finally, the end of my day is near! While some are clearing the diningroom, others are filling out the consumption sheets on what the residents ate. One girl is bringing done the cart from the ones who ate in their rooms. And everyone is running around trying to finish for the day. We are putting alot of the residents in bed for a rest and getting others up. Our Restorative Aide, Missy, who by the way, is a good friend of mine, is trying her best to find someone to help her walk the ones that need to be walked. And when all is done, we have the pleasure of filling out our books. Everything has to be charted on what you have done for the residents in your care. And leave no blanks! Because you will just have to go back and fill it out anyway. Make sure all I&O's are filled in, too! |

Well, it's 3:00 now. Time to punch out and call it a day. Hope I haven't worn you out. It is a tough job and someone has to do it. And when all is said and done, it is very rewarding to know that you have helped someone today. If you aren't a CNA, then you should be. You won't regret it. So bye for now and take care!
