Chapter 22

People are at a party and they boil over with anger when they see the widow and they want to kill her. Zorba comes over to protect her and a guy bites zorba's ear. But then Mavrandoni comes over and cuts the widow's head off with a knife. Afterwards Zorba and Manolakas drink together.

Chapter 23

Madame Hortense (Bouboulina) dies. But everyone is very cruel and wants her to die so they can feast. Zorba comforts her. People run around her house seizing as many of her belongings as they can.

Chapter 24

Zorba reflects on death and creation. Father zaharia claims that Archangel Michael appeared to him. He goes and sets the monastery on fire. Zorba finds Zaharia dead and the villagers explain that the "Lady of Revenge" had killed him for burning the monastery. Zorba cut off all the dead monk's hair and beard.
