SHEAR N STUFF

Llamas are very gentle creatures. Llamas are used for packing, carting, showing, pets, demonstrations, they can go to nursing homes, they are good pets to take on a walk down the road or on a trail at a local park. As you can see llamas are used for many things. For your llamas to do this all efficiently and well you must trim their hooves since that is their transportation. Below are pictures of what a good hoof looks like and what they look like when they are being trimmed.

                                                                     Trimming the hoof

There are some steps that NEED to be taken before a llamas hoof can be trimmed.

First, you must be able to pick up your llamas feet and touch their legs.

Second, if the llama has been out on pasture or it is muddy you should brush their feet first to get off the excess mud.

Third, trim the nails according to how long the nails are. Start by cutting off any nail that is over lapping the pad. When the nail over laps the pad there is a chance that your llama could go lame or your animal could get hoof rot. I trim nail by using a number pattern. A, B, C, D. A is the out side of the nail and B is the inside of the nail on the right pad. C is the inside of the nail, and D is the out side of the left pad.
Next go back and even out any rough spots. Treat the llama as you would your self. Don't cut the nail too short, and don't leave the nail to long either.
After you have done this repeat these steps on each hoof.
Llamas nails grow at different speeds. So for the first couple of months check your llamas nail every couple of weeks and get them on a toe-trimming plan or schedule

This is what a llamas hoof should look like. All the parts of the nail should be as even as you can get them with the pad.

The process of trimming toe nails isn't that hard at all. All you need is a sharp clippers and a strong hand. If you are smaller in body weight it helps to have some one else there that can lean against the llama so you can trim.

After awhile the llamas get use to you picking up their feet and it all gets easier.

This hoof looks pretty good. All it needs is a few more cuts to make it even along the pad.
