Marie Antoinette

The tragic story of the often misunderstood Queen Marie Antoinette unfolds in this grand 1938 film. The settings are breathtaking beautiful and the antiques were all real. The movie starts wih the young Austrian archduchess learning that she will one day become queen of France and ends with her sad untimely death. This is the movie to see for anyone interested in this period, or history in general. The love story between the queen and the Swedish count is so touching that it will bring you to tears.

The casting of Marie Antoinette was excellent, I must say. I honestly believe that Norma Shearer should have won the Oscar for that year. Others to look for that played their roles exceptionally is Gladys George playing the sharp tongued du Barry wonderfully, Joseph Schildkraut as the slimy villian d'Orleans, and the legendary John Barrymore in the small, but important role of Louis XV. However, you will not be able to miss Robert Morley in his debut film playing the shy awkward King that you come to love. He earned a well deserved Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Louis XVI.
