Carl Alonzo Costelloe was born September 13, 1906 on the Costelloe Ranch, Winchuck River, Harbor, Curry County, Oregon, to Edmond Costelloe and his wife Alice Dow Costelloe. He grew up working on the Costelloe ranch and worked in the logging industry. He joined the Army in 1929 and served a year in Wyoming and on the Mexican Border. He returned to the Harbor area where he married Irene Henderson. She was born August 4, 1912 in Marshfield, Coos County, Oregon. Irene's mother died when she was 2 1/2 years old and she was raised by Goldie and Charles Smith who also lived on the Winchuck. Carl had met her before he went into the service. They were married December 30, 1932 at Gold Beach, Oregon. The ceremony was preformed by Rev. J.W. Angell and witnessed by his brothers, Leonard and Elmer Costelloe. Carl and "Rene" had one daughter, Joan in
October 21, 1933 in Gold Beach, Oregon. For a time they lived in Dyerville, California, but
moved back to Oregon in 1945, when Carl's half brother, Jack Gilmore returned from the South Pacific. Carl and Rene moved to Klamath Falls in the early 1950's where they owned a 15 acre farm
and where he worked as a journeyman carpenter for 22 years. |
