Standard chalkboard

Materials:
        1 large sheet of plywood
        black paint or chalkboard paint
        sand paper
        an eraser or rag covered in chalk dust

Smooth out the plywood sheet with the sandpaper.
Paint the smooth surface with two coats of paint.
Dust the board with the eraser or rag before using, as this will create the erasable surface. 

Roll-up portable chalkboard

Materials:
        1 sheet of canvas or other heavy cloth
        (Cotton can be used. However, you need to cover the face with a layer of
            carpenter's glue)
        1 pole
        black paint or chalkboard paint
        strong glue, small nails, or a heavy thread
        rope
        An eraser or rag covered in chalk dust
 

Paint the canvas with a double coat of paint.
Place the pole on the back of the canvas across the top
Roll the pole and canvas back, securing the canvas around the pole with the
glue, nails or thread
Attach the rope across the top of the chalkboard so it can be hung.
Dust the board with the eraser, and roll it up with the paint side facing
out.
