20th Anniversary Season ~ Game # 289

This is not how you want a game to end but due to the new SPAR Curfew Rule, The SweetHearts were called various names after the game since they sent the last two batters up just to strike out to end the inning.

The game didn't start this way however. First the 'Hearts had to play the game without their starting catcher and third baseman. Moving players around didn't help the game early on.

After a full one inning the 'Hearts lead the Lady Renegades by a score or 5-4. The game seemed to go back and forth all afternoon as the Ladies scored four more runs to take an 7-5 lead in the middle of the second. The SweetHearts came back to pull ahead 8-7 at the end of two. They knew the object in these new curfew rule games was to always be ahead at the end of each inning because if time runs out the game reverts back to the last FULL inning. The Lady Renegades knew it too. They managed to tie the game in the third before the home half of the inning.

Now came the inning that will be remembered for a long time. The 'Hearts managed to get base runners on and move them around with effective bunting and double steals to push the score to 14-8. The base umpire commented that there was less than five minutes to play and the SweetHearts only had one out. If time ran out while we were still batting the game would go back to an 8-7 score - still leaving the 'Hearts ahead but with much less of a score to show for all their work this inning.

Coach Greg then sent Brittany up to strike out. We needed two quick outs to kill the inning - preserving the scoring done that inning. Two strikes and she gets hit by a pitch. Time was ticking away. Leah is sent up to do the same. After five pitches she managed to strike out. At the same time Brit over ran a steal of third and was tagged out ending the inning. The Lady Renegades came to bat and got three batters to the plate before the game was called.

Most people watching were not sure what they just saw but the SweetHearts parents knew. They got caught by this same rule in the first game of the season. They knew - Not Again!

The SweetHearts upped their record to 2-1-1.
