SweetHearts vs
Baseburners About all we can say is
that we did win the coin toss. From
there things seemed to go from bad to worse. By the second inning we had 7 of
9 players on the field as 11 year olds – first year players in the league. It didn’t help that the
other team made a point of NOT swinging the ball unless it was dead center
over the plate and then they crowded the plate so tight that the pitches were
almost never in the strike zone. The first inning began
with 3 walks in the first four batters and loading the bases. Two hits later
plus a hit batter put the Baseburners on their path to six runs in the top of
the first inning. Passed balls by the
catcher let them steal bases every time you looked away. Our first inning
proved to be our undoing with an opening infield out and two strike outs in
the first five batters. The score showed the deep hole we had dug at 0-6. The second inning looked
no better as the Baseburners continued to crowd the plate forcing one pass
ball after another. Six walks, two
strike outs and one infield out left us going though 12 batters and the score
spiraling to 13 to -0. The bottom half
of order began to have some minor luck as runners began to get off the base
and steal. Our first three batters walked then stole home before Haley struck
out swinging the bats in hopes of getting the team started. As we took the field for
the third we knew time was not on our side so we changed pitches and allowed
Haley to come in a pitch. Her style of pitch forced them to swing the bat and
make contact. Our only problem is that we had stood around so long that our
fielders couldn’t catch a ball. The Baseburners then burned up the
bases picking up four more runs before the game was called at the time limit.
