What
would turn out to be the worst opening game loss by the SweetHearts since
1989, began as perfect as possible. In less than half a dozen pitches rookie
pitcher Ashley Person shut down the Lady Renegades with the assistance
of second base Caitlin Watzlavik and first base Amanda Meche. The end of
the top half of the first inning looked promising even with the team's
leading pitcher arriving late for the game.
The excitement was very short-lived when base running errors would kill
the only on-base threat the 'Hearts would have all night. Samantha Jagneaux
would pitch a near flawless game striking out eight of the thirteen SweetHearts
she would face. Seven of those came in a row as the Hearts could not catch
up with her pitching.
The great plays of the first inning vanished into the wind as throwing,
fielding, pitching, and catching errors killed the SweetHearts game plan.
The Renegades ran up the score to 7-0 by the end of two, 8-0 by three,
and scored eight more runs before the umpires called the game with two
outs in the fourth.
Afterwards the coaches talked about the importance of getting to the game
on time, getting proper warm-up time, and staying focused in the game.
Next up for the Hearts are the Baseburners, a 14-7 winner over the Slammers
last night.
