SweetHearts vs Lady Renegades

We knew we would have a better game tonight since both teams were looking for that "just right" pitcher. Mary M. began the game for the SweetHearts and looked very good. She managed to get through the first inning with no runs with one strike-out and two walks. She was helped greatly with a defense that finally figured out how to play the game.

In the bottom of the first the 'Hearts put together good base running with solid hits by Grace and Tori to take a 2-0 lead. The top of the second began a cause for concern as silly mistakes slowed up in the SweetHearts defense allowing the Renegades to take full advantage and score four runs. However, the 'Hearts got runs of their own in the second with Chelsey and Amber tying the game at 4-all.

In the top of the third Mary M. had her best and fastest inning yet as she allowed just one run on one walk. She was helped by three outstanding defensive plays. In the SweetHearts half of the third, a lead off hit by Brandy, followed by a (taken away) homerun by Mary M. and hits by Grace, Tori, Katie, Samantha, and Alyssa all contributed to a four run inning. [Mary was 'robbed' of her homerun when she failed to slide at home on a close play which is the park's rule to protect the catcher.]

In the top of the fourth Tori came in to pitch and shut down the Renegades on two hits and no runs. The bottom half saw the 'Hearts go "three-up-three-down" leaving the score 8-5 with an inning to go.

Tori came back to the mound in the top of the fifth and final inning. After giving up three straight hits and two runs, the SweetHearts shut down the game with three quick outs winning their first game of the season and preserving a victory for Coach Greg in his 325th game as the coach of the 'Hearts.

The SweetHearts are now 1-1 on the season. Mary gets the win pitching three innings, allowing five runs on four hits, with four walks and one strike out. Tori gets the save pitching two innings giving up two runs on five hits with no walks and one strike out. Top hitters for the team were Grace and Tori with two hits each. Brandy, Katie, Samantha, Amber, and Mary Z each had one hit.
