20th Anniversary Season ~ Game # 291

As the SweetHearts took the field against the only team they had lost to, they were remembering the 16-1 beating they took the last time. By the end of the first inning not only did the 'Hearts have the lead but they had held the Warriors to no runs. The SweetHearts had visions that they could at least play with this team. However, the magic would not hold up for a full five innings. After four wonderful innings, the Warriors battled back and broke the spirits of the SweetHearts in a 9-4 ball game. The final score would not tell the tell of the whole game.

Meghan began the game by catching a bullet line shot from the very first batter. That would be followed by a ground out to first. Amanda then threw out the next batter as she attempted to steal third. All this against the team that had scored 16 runs before the 'Hearts got their first base runner in the last game.

In the bottom of the first the 'Hearts took advantage of a wild pitcher and turned two opening walks into two runs on some fancy base running.

The top of the second saw the Warriors ground out to first and Meghan strike out the next two batters to again shut down the league's number one team. The SweetHearts could manage nothing in the second to up their lead of 2-0.

In the third the Warriors took a walk and turned in into one run before Meghan struck out three batters in a row to end the inning. The 'Hearts would again use their base running to turn Warrior errors into runs as they upped the score to 4-1.

The Warriors bounced back in the fourth as the managed two runs between a ground ball out, fly out to center field, and a strike out. The Warrior pitcher finally got hot as she got three out in four batters. The score was now 4-3 as the final inning began.

With the game on the line the SweetHearts only had to get three outs from the bottom of the Warriors batting order. First Meghan gave up a walk, then she got a strike out. Not bad. Then came a single followed by another single and two runs had scored. Then another strike out. Two outs and the top of the order came up.

At that point the once great game fell apart. A smashing two run home run upped the score to 7-4 and the Warriors were still not through. Two more runs would score before the SweetHearts could get a routine out at first. From leading 4-3, the 'Hearts now came to bat behind 9-4.

Two strike outs, a walk, and a ground out spelled the end to four innings of great softball and one bad inning. The SweetHearts dropped their record to 3-2-1 for the season. They play again Tuesday night.
