A dramatic two out homerun in her final at bat as a SweetHeart, Chelsea tied the score and led her team on a six run rally to defeat the Bayou Blasters and take the 12 and under, Junior League, championship by a score of 8-5. The SweetHearts finished the season 13-1 with their only loss being a 2-0 defeat by the Nightmares.
Early on the game did not seem to be going the Heart's way. Even being short a player in the first inning, the Blasters scored two runs on some sloppy play by the SweetHearts. Following an inning opening triple and a walk, the Maplewood team stranded both runners as the next three batters struck out.
In the second inning the tables were reversed when the Bayou Blasters were shut down as Jessi Webb tossed three strike outs in the next four batters. The Hearts then used the bottom of their order to produce two runs on a double by Chelsea.
The Blasters then seemed to put the game away as they scored three more runs to pull away 5-2 with the middle of the Heart's order due to bat. The Sweethearts went down in order and the game looked as if it was over.
In the fourth Jessi worked her magic again as she too shut the opponent down, 1-2-3. The Hearts knew their season was rapidly coming to a close and with the bottom of the order due up things looked bleak. It looked even worse after the Blaster's Stacie Woods struck out the first two batters. Then came a minor break, two walks to the last two batters in the Hearts lineup brought Chelsea back to the plate.
Coach talked to her and told her that this could be her last at-bat as a SweetHearts and to go out in style - give it all she had. Little did he know what was about to happen. Chelsea said she wanted to "put in on Ms. Sherrie's car (out in the parking lot)". On the first pitch she nearly did just that, hitting the ball to the fence in right center finishing her three year career as a SweetHearts with a three-run, game tying, homerun.
However, the Hearts weren't finished. After telling the next six batters the same thing (this may be your last at bat as a SweetHeart), the next five batters produced three more runs to put the SweetHearts ahead for good. The SweetHearts had scored six runs between the first two strikeouts and the third one.
Now it was up to Jessi Webb to finish the game and hold the lead. Knowing that this was her last inning in the red and white of the SweetHearts, she got the first batter to pop-up to the catcher, Chelsea. She walked the next batter. The next batter hit a line drive to the second baseman that hit the runner going to second (an out due to interference), the second baseman picked up the deflected ball and tossed it to first in time to record the "double play". The Hearts stood there until they realized the umpire's calls and then began their celebration of a year's work. They had finished 13-1 and sole owners of the league championship. A first for the SweetHearts in 18 years.
