A classic battle between two of the leagues top pitches left a total of 23 batters shaking their heads as they went down with strike outs. Fallon Fisher and Jessi Webb combined for only three hits and five walks to go along with all those Ks. The Nighthmares' Fisher won the battle as her team slipped past the SweetHearts 2-0 in a long awaited rematch of the season's first game.
The Nightmares scored in the first when their lead-off batter got a walk and scored on a sacrifice single and then a teammate's double. The game then went two scoreless innings as pitchers went strike out to strike out against each other.
In the top of the fourth the 'Mares' Fisher got only the second walk issued by Webb. She then used her speed on the bases to steal her way to third before a fielder's choice allowed her to score.
The SweetHearts knew that they had to produce two runs in their half of the inning and with four of their top five hitters due up, the chances looked good. Ashlei Morrell got on with an opening walk and made it to third but was left there when Fisher struck out the next three batters on 12 pitches.
Webb went back out on the mound knowing things looked bleak but determined to finish strong. She got three outs in just nine pitches to give the 'Hearts one last chance. Fisher need just 10 pitches to finish off the bottom of the 'Hearts order and handed the Maplewood team their first loss of the season.
The SweetHearts will take their 9-1 record into Monday nights game against Magic.
