State ASA Tournament
Saturday June 30, 2007 -  Games #367-#368

Taking a recreation team to an All-Star and Tournament team tourney almost seems suicidal but the SweetHearts took their best efforts to see how they stack up  against the top teams. At moments they held their own. At the plate they were fearless and other times they were down-right comical. There were times they looked like the teams they had beat up on in league and sometimes they looked like they could beat much better teams.

Saturday under threatening skies we took the field in the ASA State Tournament and at first looked like things would finally change for us.  Below are the short stories of each game.

Game one - HERicanes:

Our first game playing top-notch tournament players was an eye opener even for the other team. At first we looked fairly good by only giving up one run with Taylor getting two K's. In the top of the second Megan walked to lead off and managed to steal her way to score our own run to tie the game.

However, the past 'Hearts came out in the bottom of the second giving the HERicanes six runs before Taylor could shut the down with a couple of strike outs. All we could manage was a single run as Leah manage to steal home after a base on balls. In the third and fourth innings we managed one run each as we again to play better holding the 'caines to just one more run. We again found ourselves in the losers bracket.

SweetHearts 0 1 1 1 3
HERicanes 1 6 1 x 8

Game two - L. Express:

Once again we see the La. Express. After being shutdown by them in the Moss Bluff tourney last weekend we go back to the plate against a very good team. Things looked to be different this time as the team and Taylor got two quick outs on plays by Megan and Jeannette and Leah but could not seem to end the inning before giving up five runs. When we came to the plate we went away quietly - three dinky hits to the right side of the infield resulting in three easy outs.

In the second the 'Hearts again got two quick outs before allowing the Express to score another run. At that point there was still a small flicker of life in the team but another quick three-up-three-down put an end to that hope.

In the third the 'Hearts reversed the trend and gave up 10 runs before getting the last two outs to end a painful inning. The 'Hearts struggled but did manage to get two runs across much to the anger of the Express coaches.

The game fell apart in the final inning as the Express scored at will while Leah, Tracy, and Taylor were rotated on the mound. Finally they had to set off the bases and swung at nothing to strike out to end the inning much to the embarrassment of the SweetHearts. The Hearts went away quietly at the plate - 3 up- 3 down to end their softball season.  11-1 in recreation and 0-6 in tournaments.

LA Express 5 1 10 6 22
SweetHearts 0 0 2 0 2
