EAGLE BOARD OF REVIEW
EAGLE BOARD OF REVIEW
OBJECT: This page that will help the LIFE Scout prepare for his Board of Review. It tells the Scout what to bring, what to expect, and how to dress.
All the Life Scout's Paperwork must be completed and have been sent to Council, before his 18th birthday. It is then forwarded to District Advancement Chair to co-ordinate the Board of Review.
The Board of Review can take place up to three months after the Scout's 18th birthday. The final cut off is 6 months after he turns 18, however during this 3 to 6 month period a letter of explaination for the delay must be submitted when the paper work is submitted to the Eagle Scout Service Center.
If an Eagle Scout Board of review is held after the six months following the candidate's 18th birthday, the Eagle Scout must petition the National Boy Scout Committee for an extension.
The local council, must first process the request detailing the extenuating circumstances why the board of review was not held.
What to bring for your Board of Review:
- Bring your scrapbook that has the pictures of your Eagle Project progress.
- BRING your OA or what ever other honor badges you have earned. Including any Yawgoog segments.
(The OA sash should not be worn, just bring it if you've earned it.)
- A Scout can bring water to the Board of Review if he needs to.
- Bring your Scout Handbook.
What to Wear:
- The complete Class "A" Uniform of your Troop. Make sure it is clean and you make a neat appearance.
- The Merit Badge Sash. This should be completed with at least all 21 required merit badges and they should be sewn on.
What To Expect:
- There will be 3 to 6 members on the Board of Review.
They will consist of members from the Scout's Troop Committee, the Troop Advancement Chairperson, and at least one member of the District Advancement Committee.
Board of Review members could also consist of Scoutmasters from other troops. Board members do not have to be registered in Scouting, but they must have an understanding of the importance and purpose of the Eagle Board of Review.
- Board members must be at least 21 years of age.
- The whole review should take 30 to 45 minutes.
- The candidate usually will have to recite the Scout Oath, Law, and Promise. Sometimes if a flag is in the room, you will be asked to lead us in the pledge.
- The decision of the board must be unanimous. However, if you are not happy with the decision of the board, you have the right to appeal.
- It is the policy of this District Advancement Committee that the Scout will be asked if he has an objection to anyone seated on his Board of Review.
The questions that will be asked will be more about the Scout's feelings and experiences in Scouting, rather than how to do specific things in scouting.
This is not a retest. It is to find out how Scouting has influenced the Scout and his future.
Who cannot take part in the Board of Review:
- Any relative or parent no matter what their connection or position in the troop.
- Your Scoutmaster, or Assistant Scoutmasters.
Usually the Scoutmaster introduces the Scout to the board, they are allowed to stay, but they are not allowed to participate in the review.
The exception to this rule if the Scoutmaster is a relative then they will be asked to leave the room.
