Day 1
-Explore 2D shapes (lots probably already known:
circle, square, triangle, rectangle) -use geometric language (sides, vertices, faces)
to sort them -spell shapes; can you see something similar in
the spelling? -make the shapes with your fingers and your body
(?) teams of 4!!!! -spell shapes (cover and ask) -tell the shape story -use paper shapes and make a picture |
Day 2
-explore the remaining 2D shapes (pentagon,
hexagon, octagon, trapezoid, parallelogram, rhombus, quadrilateral) -make as many shapes as possible with
triangle-shape cut outs and categorize into 4, 5, 6, etc… number of sides and
vertices -begin to categorize; make a chart of: faces edges
(lines)
vertices *2D shapes all only have 1 face!!! -categorize into the circle and non-circle shapes (circles and polygons; polygons split into 3
sided, 4 sided, etc…) -give sets of shapes and sort them, tell the
sorting rule (faces, edges, vertices) |
Day 3
Tie with science and wheels – story in basic
concepts book!!! -simple shapes in complex shapes -ABC made of shapes -geoboard shapes (if I can’t get elastics, then at
least use the geoboard paper with toothpicks) (I or 1 kid pulls the task card, and they do it
with toothpicks or drawings) |
Day 4
-symmetry |
Day 5
-symmetry -On my own – lines of symmetry work sheets
-Day 3 showed ABC shapes, today show ABC lines of symmetry
(hand out some ABC’s to different groups, come together and see if your
correct)
-symmetrical families concentration; draw other
half, cut out faces, turn over and match |
Day 6
-direction, position -do direction game where you and friend hide your
creations and tell others to create it with directions (where should you put
it task cards) |
Day 7
-transformations
-slide (translation), flip (reflection), turn
(rotation) flips, slides, and turns task card |
Day 8
Transformations -make own tangram -do tangram puzzles |
Day 9
Explore 3D shapes – (sphere, cube, pyramid, cone,
cylinder, rectangular prism, triangular prism, *2D shapes only have 1 face, but 3D shapes have
many faces!!! And, of course, vertices and edges (lines) -make shapes with toothpicks and plastercine
(skeleton models task cards) -relate these to the 2D counterparts |
Day 10
Make 3D shapes with nets and boxes Quest p. 44, 45 |
Day 11
Shape walk Sort some 3D objects and tell the sorting rule
using geometric language |
Day 12
Simple shapes in complex shapes Spinner game (find the 2D in the 3D)Quest p.42/43 |
Day 13
On my own – build a structure sheets -solid sculptures task card |
Day 14
On my own – build a structure sheets |
Day 15
On my own – build a structure sheets |
