GOALS FOR PRACTICUM #2

 

Within the 3 to 4 day “observation” period, I wish to:

 

1        meet and interact with the various members of the school community (e.g., principal, vice-principal, office administrator(s), school staff members, support personnel, parents)

2        meet, get acquainted with and observe the Teacher Mentor and students as they work in a variety of teaching-learning situations

3        learn classroom routines and expectations

4        observe various procedures in the general school setting (e.g., performance of teacher duties, staff and team meetings, extra-curricular activities)

5        study the Teacher Mentor’s approach to curriculum planning

6        view and informally discuss some of the student’s work

7        learn about the special strengths and needs of the students

8        become familiar with the various learning resources within the classroom (e.g., texts, maps, charts, audio-visual equipment, arts materials and tools)

9        become familiar with the school’s teaching resources and procedures for their use (e.g., library texts, audio-visual aids, computer labs, photocopier)

10    provide instructional support to students in individual and small-group settings

11    identify and discuss the role of the Teacher Candidate for upcoming Practicum stages

12    study the Teacher Mentor’s approach to assessment and evaluation

 

During the 6 to 8 day “transition” period, I wish to:

 

1        manage a variety of classroom  routines (e.g., attendance, opening exercises,

      dismissal, lunchroom routines, library procedures, administrative tasks)

2        plan and deliver individual and small-group support activities related to the

            Teacher Mentor’s existing instructional plans

3        plan and oversee small-group instruction with a specific focus initiated by the Teacher

mentor

4        plan and teach large-group lesson(s) with specific areas of focus as determined by the

            Teacher Mentor

5        outline longer term plans for instructional responsibilities during the upcoming four week

            consolidation Stage of the Practicum

6        continue working on the creation of units with assistance from the Teacher Mentor

 

During the 20 day “consolidation” period, I wish to:

 

1        identify the instructional focus for teaching and learning in a variety of program areas

2        link the identified instructional focus to expectations from the Ontario Curriculum

3        outline longer term plans and instructional procedures to support learning

4        identify various means by which the students will demonstrate their learning

5        assess, evaluate and report on student achievement of targeted expectations

6        access and utilize a variety of relevant and purposeful resource materials

7        differentiate learning (process, product, content, assessment) according to individual student needs
