Shape Story

Here are the squares. They all live by themselves. Here are the circles. They all live by themselves. Here are the triangles. They all live by themselves. Here are the rectangles. They all live by themselves, too.

The squares like only those with four sides exactly the same. The circles like only those who are perfectly round. The triangles like only those who have three sides. The rectangles like only those with two short sides exactly the same and two long sides exactly the same.

Everyday the shapes went out to play but not together. One day an awful thing happened. The circles were playing on top of a hill. Some of them fell and went rolling down the hill where there triangles were playing. There was a huge fight. The squares and the triangles heard the commotion and rushed over to see what was happening. They joined the fight.

During all the fighting, one of the triangles jumped in the air and came down right on top of the rectangle. Everyone was silent. They just stared; the triangle and the rectangle had created a beautiful tree!

Then everyone became excited. They all wanted to make something. They grouped together to make a train, a wagon, a house, a sun, and many more things. They all went home singing because they had learned something very special. They knew that being different is not bad, it’s great.

THE SHAPE SONG
(sung to the tune of Twinkle, Twinkle)

Terry triangle, look at me,
count my sides, there are three

Sammy square, that's my name,
I have four sides all the same

Robby rectangle, I have four,
two long
two short
but no more

Cindy circle, just one line,
make it round,
that is fine
