Grade 2 Language Arts

Day 2

Today, you will read stories about friendship, which is what we want to write about!!!

Give a few minutes to tell about a good friend, lets share our answers and write them down in journals.

Before we read, what do you do when you see a word you don’t know? Ask a friend, raise your hand and ask the teacher, look in a dictionary – try to remember it, and we’ll put it up on the word list!!!!! (action word, naming word, describing word, other words)

Now, you can choose any of the Frog and Toad books you like –BUT – lets keep a record of it!!! Write down the title, and try to find the friendship in the story!!!!! --- this will help us later when we make our friendship stories

Let 2 or 3 kids re-tell their stories at the end

Day 3

Make groups for reader’s theater (A LOST BUTTON, A SWIM, ICE CREAM) -- show each role: what is that word narrator??? Well, when you read a story, it’s the one who isn’t speaking, it’s the person telling the story

ML:  Quotations – narrator

Re-read THE STORY – how can you tell that someone is talking???

On board draw two faces: one has a bubble next to it, and one has quotes; put some words in the bubble, what should I put in the quotation marks??

Put into groups, and point out on the sheet, the word NARRATOR – what is this, when there aren’t any quotes, it’s the person describing the story  --- this will be you --- therefore we need to add two things to the KWL chart: quotation marks, and a narrator (author).

Each group read the story, decide on the roles that you will play (fill out and keep it + one for me)

Review some rules for good work in groups:

-respect

-listen to others

-wait your turn

-praise people

-try to help

Day 4

Read THE GARDEN in a flat dry voice

ML: expression in reading and writing

-these things will help you to tell the emotions or moods that you want to; it will help the reader make a mental picture!!!

--how do you know how to express the proper emotion??

-size of the word: “NOW SEEDS, START GROWING!”

-exclamation marks:

“Look at your garden!”

-words themselves:

“At last,” shouted Toad; “Drat!”

-repetition: “Toad, Toad, wake up”

(when you are doing the reader’s theater groups, don’t forget to look at these parts)

Read THE GARDEN again, with emotion!!!

Lets make a Frog and Toad with a mouth- book thingy:

-choose a story

-find a part where they are speaking

-write this in the bubble

-do the art thing – frog with a mouth

READER’S THEATER PRACTISE (5 min)

Day 1

Introduce story and friendship (what do these things mean?)

What is a story? How do we write a story? How do we write a story with a main idea? How do we write a story about friendship?

We are going to make a big class book about friendship

Need to know what is friendship + what is a story!!!

KWL chart: what is a story? Do some crazy examples: is this a story “I like you”; “farah”; the boy went to the store: etc…

Read  THE STORY (can you add anything to the KWL chart): are there any words that you don’t know???

Journals: what is a good friend - tell about a good friend

Day 5

Re-read THE GARDEN (with emotion)

Now we know 2 things that authors use to make stories better: quotes, narrator, emotions

TODAY, a new one:

adjectives: what are these?????

Compare:

The boy

The fat boy

The great big fat boy

The dog

The ugly dog

The big ugly dog

(which ones help the reader make a mental picture?)

Can you think of anymore??

Read: CHRISTMAS EVE

Let’s look for all of the descriptive words

-when you are writing, use these types of words to make a mental picture for the reader

Journals: use an adjective to make a new sentence: -- write long and longer additive adjective descriptions of objects, animals, etc… -- tell how the adjectives make you feel

READER’S THEATER PRACTISE (5 min)

Day 7

All stories have settings

Reread A LIST

Read COOKIES

Compare the settings in the 2 stories (one is all over the place, the other is only in one place)

Choose one of the 2 stories that we read today, and fill out another  character map, on frog or toad

Lets make a TRIORAMA and paper dolls for a story (make these!!!!!!) – put the setting and characters together (write on the back: setting: the swamp)

What are some good order words that will help the reader know when??

(first)

(next, then, second, third) (last, finally)

Reread THE GARDEN: how can we order it all? Cut up strips and put in all together --- sort into beginning, middle, and the end.

ML: use connecting words to link simple sentences

READER’S THEATER PRACTISE (5 min)

Day 9

Remember the order?? All stories have a beginning, middle and an end

Reread COOKIES

Do a beginning middle end sheet together with: COOKIES

READER’S THEATER PRACTISE (5 min)

Day 6

What do all stories have? Well, we know that they have characters: you need to have characters, or there wouldn’t be a story

Who are the main characters in our stories so far?? What are they like? How do you know? You look at what they do, what they say, what they look like, how they act!!!!

Read  A LIST(On the overhead) -- lets look for the characteristics of the characters!!!!

Lets do a character analysis together!!!! (character web) (write on the back: character: FROG)

Make some cut out characters on Popsicle sticks

READER’S THEATER PRACTISE (5 min)

Day 12

Brainstorm potential story ideas for them, including friendship and the adventures (problem-solution) that they had

Use graphic organizers (story structure map) to make the first draft of story: you need to decide the characters (FROG, TOAD, any others???); the setting; the problem; the solution; friendship expressed  --- try to fill it in, but don’t worry, its just a tool to help you!!!!!! I MODEL IT FOR THEM

Write First draft of stories for class book

5-final draft

6-reflection

7-illustration

READER’S THEATER: A SWIM

Day 13

Read draft of story to teacher, concentrating on the flow, sense, sequence (will reader know what happened first? Were words included to help the reader know the sequence?), should you add, delete, or change any descriptive words (do words help reader’s form a mental picture?)

Edit stories --- look for capitals; periods, exclamation marks, question marks; spelling;

Make a final draft – meet with kids one on one

Do the writing reflection

Once all of this is finished, then work on the illustrations of frog and toad
